“How have the security guards been working out?” he asked, leaning back in his chair. “Any issues?”

“Not that I’ve been informed of. Mario has been dealing with them, and I’ve checked in with him each day to make sure it’s going okay.”

“That’s good. Hopefully, they’ll be a strong deterrent for anyone thinking of targeting the ski area.”

Kayleigh cupped her hands around her mug. “How long do you think we’ll need to keep them? I don’t imagine this is a long-term solution.”

“You’re right. It’s not. What I’m hoping is that having the guards around the clock will prevent any further incidents while we try to figure out who might be behind everything.”

“Is that even possible?”

Hudson took a sip of his coffee, then regarded her with his intense blue gaze, making small butterflies spring to life in Kayleigh’s stomach. “I’ve been talking to someone who is an expert at computer surveillance, and he’s monitoring the systems here. He’s also going through old recordings Mario sent him to see if he can figure anything out from those.”

Kayleigh sighed. “I just want it to be over.”

However, as soon as she said that, she realized that once it was over, Hudson would be gone. He was there because of this situation, and once he was satisfied that it had been handled, he’d go back to New York and continue his travels around the world. Serenity Point would no longer need his attention.

Would he look back on this time as nothing more than an irritation he’d had to deal with? Did it really matter? Did she want him to view being in Serenity as something special?

Kayleigh realized that she did, but at the same time, she knew she shouldn’t.

“It won’t last forever,” Hudson said, probably trying to be reassuring. But in light of her realization, she didn’t want to be reassured. “Sooner or later, they’re going to slip up, and with so many of us on alert, someone will see something.”

“I hate to think we’d all be outsmarted by this person.”

“It might seem like that right now, but we won’t be in the long run,” Hudson said. “I have every confidence.”

“Is Alexander worried about what’s happening here?” Kayleigh asked. “Is that why he sent you?”

“I wouldn’t say he’s worried.” Hudson took another sip of his coffee. “He’s just a little… concerned. And since I’m usually the person who handles issues that come up, he sent me.”

“At the expense of other things you could be dealing with?”

Hudson shrugged. “No one here asked for this person to mess with the resort. This takes priority, but other things are still being taken care of. I’m not the only one capable of checking in on the resorts and hotels. I can do a lot remotely and through video calls. It’s just that Alexander prefers to remind the locations that we haven’t forgotten them by having me show up in person. If that makes sense.”

“A reminder that headquarters keeps an eye on them?”

Hudson nodded. “Something like that.”

“But you’ve never been here before.”

“There are a few locations that Alexander prefers to keep an eye on himself.”

Kayleigh wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Why would Alexander want to monitor Serenity himself? Was it because of her lack of experience?

He’d seemed to have confidence in her when he’d offered her the position of manager, but perhaps she’d misread the situation. Maybe she’d been on trial for the past few years, and she was failing.

“What’s making you frown?”

Kayleigh looked up from where she’d been staring unseeing at her coffee. “Just the situation. It’s not something I ever envisioned having to deal with.”

“This isn’t the first time Remington has had issues like this at a property,” Hudson said as he reached out to set his mug on the table. He laced his fingers across his stomach, still leaning back in his chair. “As much as we’d like for there to never be thefts or problems, that’s not a reality.”

“It’s just a bit weird that Alexander hasn’t spoken to me about this himself. I mean, I sent reports about it to him, but he never contacted me for more details.”

“Does he contact you regularly?”

“Every few months, he’ll call me.”
