“It was. A team from our legal department will be taking over from here, and Alexander will be flying in to fire the hotel manager.”

“I’m sorry you’re having to jump right into this mess.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Hudson opened the door of the car and got out. “This is my job, and I don’t mind doing it.”

Especially if it meant he could spend more time with Kayleigh, though he wasn’t pleased that this particular state of affairs was what had created that opportunity.

“I’m going to have to go since I’m getting ready to board the plane,” Hudson said. “If you want, I can send you the information for my social media so we can chat once I have access to wi-fi on the plane.”

“I don’t want to tie up more of your time,” Kayleigh said.

“I have nothing but time while I fly. I’m going to contact the person I want to handle what’s happened with Wilder, but other than that, I don’t have much else to do to fill my time on the plane.”

He could work—there was always work—but the prospect of chatting with Kayleigh was infinitely more appealing.

“Okay. Thanks.”

Hudson grabbed his bags from the trunk. “Just give me a few minutes to get on the plane, then I’ll text you the information.”

They said goodbye, then Hudson focused on getting himself to where he needed to be to board his plane. He was glad that he’d been able to pass off the hotel problem in Baton Rouge to someone else, because now he needed to be able to focus on what was happening in Serenity.

After they’d been in the air for about forty-five minutes and he’d had a conversation with Caren, the woman from HR, detailing what he needed from her, Hudson used the social media contact info they’d exchanged before takeoff to call Kayleigh again.

He hesitated for a moment, then decided to request a video call. If she didn’t want video, she could accept with just audio, but he really hoped she wouldn’t.

When the call connected with video, Hudson couldn’t help but smile as Kayleigh’s face filled the screen of his phone. Her hair was pulled back, and it appeared that she’d already removed her makeup. She looked beautiful.

However, he could see the strain on her face, and the smile she gave him in return looked weary.

“Hey.” It looked like she was seated at a table with a plate in front of her.

“Are you eating your dinner?” Hudson asked. “I could call back later.”

“It’s not a problem for me unless you’d rather I not eat in front of you.”

Hudson chuckled. “I’ll be getting a meal here soon, so we can eat together.”

“What are you going to have?”

“Roast chicken, veggies, and potatoes. How about you?”

“I made myself crepes with ham and gruyère cheese.” She lifted her plate so he could see the contents. “And for dessert, I have crepes with berries and whipped cream.”

“Crepes two ways, huh?”

“Yep. It’s my go-to. I don’t usually eat dessert, but since crepes can be both sweet and savory, I decided to indulge.”

“And it sounds like perhaps this was a day you needed a little indulgence.”

Kayleigh’s gaze dropped as she sighed. “It was a day. That’s for sure.”

“I’m really sorry that this has happened to Wilder. I know this is going to be hard for you and him to deal with.”

Kayleigh lifted her hands to rub her eyes, and Hudson wondered if she was going to cry. He wouldn’t blame her if she did. This was a terrible ordeal.

She took a deep breath, then lowered her hands. “Our whole family is going to feel the impact of this. And I’m worried that a rumor is going to start that the truth will never catch up to.”

“I have already told Caren, the woman from our HR department, that until the situation is resolved, no one is to speak about it outside of management. Until we’ve had a chance to review everything and speak to the employee ourselves, Wilder will be considered innocent.”
