“You sent me here to investigate concerning activities. I haven’t gotten to the bottom of things yet. Plus, I’ve still gone to visit other locations as requested, so that’s put a dent in the time I’ve been able to devote to things here.”

“Well, let me know if you’re planning a permanent move there,” Alexander said dryly.

Hudson let out of a huff of laughter. “You’ll be the first to know.”

After they ended the call, Hudson continued on into the office. Kayleigh was focused on her computer monitor, tapping away at her keyboard. She’d wasted no time jumping into her work, but she did spare a moment to look up at him with a smile before focusing back on her work.

No doubt the events of the day had interfered with what she usually did. That had certainly been the case for his own plans for that day.

Hudson quietly settled down at the table, planning to take a few minutes to scan through his inbox while they waited for Wilder.

Caleb had been sorting through it for him, so Hudson was able to just look at the emails that had been flagged as important. That was very helpful, and Hudson sent a quick message to Caleb to thank him.

Even though it was after seven o’clock New York time, he got an instant reply from the man.

Caleb:Just doing my job!

Still, I do appreciate it. Wild day here, so I haven’t had much time for work.

Caleb:I’d love to hear about it. Everything has been so quiet here without you to liven things up.

HA!

I’ll give you a call tomorrow morning to fill you in. For now, enjoy your evening and say hi to your mom.

Caleb:Will do!

He’d managed to respond to three emails before there was a knock on the door, and Wilder stepped into the room. The man had an apprehensive look on his face, which Hudson completely understood. Wilder had been confronted with some awful accusations when he’d last been called to meet with them.

“Do we need Caren here for this, Hudson?” Kayleigh asked after she’d hugged her brother.

“I don’t think so,” Hudson said. “But I can confirm with her if you’d like.”

“I’d like that. Just to make sure this is all handled appropriately.”

Hudson placed a quick call to Caren, who decided that she wanted to be present. “She’ll be here in a couple of minutes.”

“Should I be worried?” Wilder asked, glancing between Hudson and Kayleigh.

“No,” Kayleigh assured him. “This is to update you on the latest developments concerning the accusations against you. Let’s have a seat around the table while we wait for Caren.”

This time, they stayed in the office since it was just the four of them, and they would fit around the table.

“How was work today?” Kayleigh asked. “Was the powder on the slopes okay?”

The tension in Wilder’s face eased a little, but his shoulders were still lifted. “Both the powder and the people were good. I’m thankful that I’ve been able to still work with everything else going on. It’s been a good distraction.”

When Caren walked into the office, she rested her hand briefly on Wilder’s shoulder before taking the remaining empty seat at the table. She gave Wilder a reassuring smile.

Hudson was glad that at least the day was going to end on a high note. There was still a mess to clean up, but for the moment, at least, Wilder could relax and just focus on his life once again.

He was curious to see how Wilder reacted to the news, and what he’d want to do with Jenn. Was he likely to have the same outlook as Kayleigh?

Even though he didn’t understand Kayleigh’s viewpoint, he suspected that Wilder would share it. And if that was the case, Hudson wouldn’t stand in their way.

Hudson had gotten to the point where he probably wouldn’t stand in the way of much of anything that Kayleigh wanted. That thought was a revelation of just how far gone he was in how he felt about her.
