“It’s like we’ve stepped into an alternate universe,” Jack Trainer said.

“Now we weave in and out,” Ryder Duke said.

She did as directed and watched her son, who was taking direction from Ford, who seemed to know what to do.

“You holding out on us, Ford?” Joe Trainer yelled at him from his circle.

“Our mom loves this song! She made us dance with her,” Nash said.

The change of direction threw her and made her stumble. The hand that steadied her clearly belonged to Ford because it lingered before releasing her.

“What happened to your face, man?” Sawyer Duke asked Ford.

“I walked into a door.”

“You and your brother by the look of it,” Sheriff Dans said.

Ford didn’t respond. It was funny watching the Dukes and the sheriff. Each knew the moves perfectly, the girls too. But the pained looks on their faces told her this was something they had to do but didn’t want to.

She kept her eyes off Ford. Her chest hurt when she looked at him.

“Left, Luke!” Nixon yelled to his brother. “I thought you had the moves, man.”

Luke raised his middle finger while looking at his feet.

After much laughter and stepping on people’s toes, the group slowed as the music finished.

“Thank you, Sheriff Dans, that was entertaining,” Autumn said when he released her.

“You’re welcome.”

She tugged her hand from Ford’s.

“That was cool,” Ritchie said, moving to her side. “I like square dancing.”

“Aunt Sheila would be proud!” Tripp Lyntacky yelled.

“What happens if you just say no and refuse to dance?” Quinn asked.

“You get fined,” Daniel Duke said.

“You’re not serious?”

“Deadly. When Sawyer refused to pay, we had to lock him up for two nights.” He pointed to the sheriff.

“And he’s your uncle?” Autumn asked.

The Dukes nodded.

“It’s a town ordinance. Nothing I could do about it.” The sheriff shrugged. “I did try.”

“Like hell,” Sawyer muttered. “Just as well you fed me.”

“And you got to be alone for two days and read.”

“True. In fact, lately I’ve been thinking I could do with going back in there.”

“The dancing makes our community closer,” Sheriff Dans said.
