“I know, and I only just found out. How do you feel about that?”

“So is he my grandfather?”

She nodded.

“Cool. When will we see him again?”

“Soon, I think. He’s going to come here. You know all those other men who were with him? The Duke brothers?”

He nodded.

“They’re my cousins.”

“Cool.”

In typical kid style, he was taking it in stride.

“I have a dad, but he’s not like some of the dads here,” Ritchie said.

She swallowed back the anger at his words. “Your dad loves you, Ritchie. He’s just not good at showing it sometimes.”

“I know, and Grace told me I was lucky I had you and all of them now, so I don’t need Dad all the time.”

“R-right.” Autumn fought back the tears.

She sat with him for a while, answering his questions until his eyelids began to close.

“Night, baby. Love you.” She kissed his soft cheek.

“Night, Mom. Love you too.”

Autumn washed and then pulled on her pj’s. Exhausted, she fell into bed and thought she’d lie there awake for hours. In minutes, she was asleep.

School was busy the next day, which meant Autumn didn’t have a lot of time to think about Ford or her father. After the final bell, she loaded Ritchie into her car and drove to the Trainers’.

“Grace told me I’m riding Sandy today.”

“That sounds fun.”

Ritchie was going horse riding with Jack and the other kids. She pulled up at the barn and got out.

“Bye!” He started for the barn.

“What? No kiss?” Autumn bent when he came back to her and planted a loud one on his cheek. “Love you.”

“You too, Mom.” He disappeared into the barn.

She followed to check on the logistics. “Hi, Jack. When do you want me to pick Ritchie up?”

“Two hours should be fine.”

Her son was talking with the other kids. It warmed her heart to see him laughing and looking happy.

“So how’s it going, Autumn?”

“Since yesterday?”
