“If anything had happened to you today, you wouldn’t have known how much you mean to me, Autumn.”

“I thought about that too. That you didn’t know I cared about you.”

He kissed her softly. “We have a future, and it will be together.”

She sighed. “If you say so.” She smiled.

“I know so. Now let’s shower and go to bed. I need to show you every way I can just what you mean to me.”

And he did.

Chapter36

He woke and reached for her, but the bed was empty. Looking around their room, Ford saw no signs of Autumn.

Eight months after she’d been kidnapped, they’d spent their first night in the new house.Their house.Looking at his watch, he saw it was early. And it was a Sunday, and his father said to take the day off.

“Where the hell are you, woman?” He wanted her back in bed so he could wake her up properly. Ritchie was a late riser, so there was plenty of time to lose himself in that lovely body of hers.

Pulling on his sweatpants, he headed through the house. It was a single story like he’d planned but bigger than the original design. Big enough for Ritchie to have a bedroom and any other children who might come along.

Ford loved this place because it had touches of him and Autumn all over it. She’d helped pick colors and furniture. Helped with moving everything in and putting things where they looked best. Had they argued? Absolutely, but he liked that about Autumn. She only let him have his way if she agreed with it.

He didn’t find her downstairs but smelled coffee. Walking through the huge doors and out onto a wide deck, he found her.

“What the hell are you doing out here and not in our bed?”

She was standing in what would be their garden when they planted it, dressed in a T-shirt that came to midthigh. His T-shirt, which looked way better on her than him. She was looking at the sun rising slowly.

“This is the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen, Ford.” She shot him a smile and then turned back.

He was used to these kinds of sunsets, but clearly she wasn’t. He came to stand at her back and wrapped his arms around her.

“Okay, I’ll let you stay out here and look at this one.”

Her body softened into his. “I thought Mr. Goldhirsh’s house felt like a home, but it didn’t, not really. This is home, Ford.”

“Our home.”

“It’s not just the house. It’s you and this place. I love it here. Love being here with you and Ritchie.”

“I know.” He kissed the side of her neck. “I feel the same. I’ve lived here my entire life and loved it, but last night felt different. Having you and Ritchie here with me has changed everything.”

“And you sleep all night now.”

“And I sleep all night.”

He held her as the sun rose and thought,Why not?Tonight they had friends and family coming to see their new home. Maybe they should have something else to celebrate.

“Wait here a minute.”

“Where would I go?” she asked as he released her.

“Such a mouthy woman.” Ford kissed her and walked back inside.

He was back minutes later. Autumn was still looking at the view.

“Autumn.”
