They were both watching the boy now. He was talking to Nash, who had taken the wood from him.

“Do you know why he was crying?” She turned back to look at him, arms now unfolded, hands clenched in fists at her side. “Was he hurt?”

“Do you think I’d let him lift wood if he was hurt?”

“No.”

“He said he didn’t want you to know what’s going on with him.”

More devastation.

“Because it would upset you,” he added quickly.

“Do you know the reason?” She was focused on Ford once more. Her eyes were wide with worry, color riding her cheekbones. Would her skin feel warm and soft? It sure looked that way.

Ford was luckily carrying wood, so he didn’t reach out to test the theory. Instead, he started moving.

“Please tell me.” She kept pace with him.

“You need to ask him. I promised I wouldn’t.”

“You’re not serious?”

“Deadly.”

“B-but you don’t even know my son, and now you’re keeping his secrets.”

She was frowning now, clearly not happy he was withholding information about her son.

He stopped and lowered the wood to the ground before facing her. There was something sweet about Autumn Harris, no getting around that fact. He couldn’t stop his eyes running down her chest, then to her waist and lower.

“I can’t believe you’re checking me out when we’re having a discussion about my son.” Her words had a snap to them.

“Just returning the favor, and you look nice in those shorts.”

Chapter7

Autumn dragged her eyes from Ford Winter and looked for her son again. He was now playing with Grace and the other Trainer/Howard kids.

“Can I ask you something, Autumn?”

She nodded. The man had no right being that hot in worn jeans and a black T-shirt with the letters SSR on the right, just above a really nice pec muscle.

Shut it down, Autumn, you are not some sex-starved woman. You’re a responsible parent and teacher.

“Sure,” she said, remembering he’d asked her a question.

“Were you ever bullied in school?”

She spun back to look at Ford. “Oh no, is he being bullied?”

“You didn’t hear that from me.”

“You didn’t just tell me my son is being bullied?”

He shook his head solemnly, and she thought that in other circumstances, the ones where her life wasn’t a complex minefield of issues she had to carefully navigate, she’d maybe want to spend more time getting to know this man. Because firstly he’d been nice to her, and secondly he wasn’t breaking his promise to Ritchie, but he was finding a way to tell her what she needed to know.

“Did you like Tobey Maguire inSpider-Man?”
