“So let’s get these horses out into the arena and the kids on them,” Nash said. “You ride, Autumn?”

“No.”

“We’ll change that,” he said, walking away with Monica trotting beside him before she could answer. “Head on outside soon,” he called over his shoulder. “We’ll sort the kids and join you. But have a look around first. Meet the horses.”

“Well, Kismet, I don’t see your master anywhere, and that’s a good thing because now I can relax. Between you and me, I’m not really sure I want to meet the horses.”

The dog started moving, so she followed her and found herself walking down the middle of the stable. Keeping her distance, she looked at the large heads and said hello but didn’t approach.

The sound of hooves had her turning, and she watched Ford ride into the stable on a large black horse. He had a fierce frown on his face and looked seriously pissed about something.

The man looks good on a horse.

He saw her, and the frown deepened. She watched as he dismounted and then walked to where she stood.

“Hi.” He stopped in front of her, hands in his pockets.

Big, sexy, and disturbing. Ford Winter made her feel jumpy.

“Hi. Ritchie is having his first lesson, so I came to watch and help out. We can’t have too many kids without parental support, otherwise they may get into trouble.” The words fell out of her mouth in a rush. His dark broody stare was making her nervous.

“I know how it works. We’ve been doing this awhile.”

“It’s nice here,” she added quickly. “I mean the house and gardens. It must have been a lovely place to grow up.”

“Why are you nervous?”

“What?” She took a step back.

He followed. “You’re talking really fast and nervous. Why? We know each other, and you weren’t nervous when I saw you in Phil’s.”

If only you knew.

Chapter15

“I’m not nervous. Why are you frowning?” she threw back at him.

“My morning has been crap if I’m being honest, and the afternoon wasn’t any better.”

“I’m sorry your morning hasn’t gone well. I hope the rest of your day improves.”

“I don’t hold out much hope. Other than the kids, that is. They’re fun.”

“Well, I’m sure the power is in you to change it.”And that sounded ridiculous.

“You’d think so, but my family has other ideas.”

“I’m going to go and catch up with the kids. Good to see you again, Ford.”Retreat, Autumn thought, before she said anything else that made her sound like an airhead.

“They seem happy with Mom and Nash, and she loves this stuff. Plus the other adults are with them.”

She could smell him. Who knew the scent of man and outdoors was such a turn-on?

“This is Lance,” he said, pointing to his horse. It had followed him and now stood at his side. “Say hello, boy.”

The horse nodded his head.

“He’s huge.”
