His eyes ran over her face and settled on her lips. They tingled.

“Men?”

“Not them either. I like to kiss women, but I don’t have the urge to do it constantly like I have since I first met you. It’s disconcerting.”

“Not a good idea.” She tried to back away, but he slid a hand around her waist, holding her close. Pulling her into his body.

“I know, and yet I’m not sure I can resist anymore.”

The kiss was soft. A fleeting brush, and then he went deeper, walking her back to the wall. His lips took hers, and Autumn was pretty sure he was ruining her for all other men. The man could kiss. He kept at it until she wanted to melt into a puddle at his feet. Only when he was ready did he lift his head, his eyes inches from hers.

“You taste good.”

Her hands gripped his shirt, and she wasn’t sure if that was to keep him closer or to steady herself.

He brushed her lips one last time. “Let’s go.”

He eased her off the wall and placed a hand on her spine. “Move those lovely limbs, Autumn.”

She’d been walking since she was a baby, but right at that moment she felt like she was taking her first steps. He, however, was walking at her side in that smooth, long-legged gait.

“We have 830 acres here.”

She listened as he talked about his ranch. He sounded calm, as if that kiss had not just happened. Land, cattle—he gave her an abbreviated version, and she focused on his voice and felt the fire slowly tamp down in her belly.Need, Autumn thought, she had it in shovelfuls for this man.

Walking out into the sunshine, they made their way a short distance to a large arena where the children had gathered. Adults were outside, leaning on the railing.

“You all good there, Autumn? Your cheeks are a bit flushed,” Ford whispered into her ear.

“Very amusing.” Her voice sounded raspy.

He gave her a wicked smile, then nudged her to where the others stood. She braced her hands on the railing and watched.

“I heard about the volleyball, Nixon. It sounds like it will be a great day in Lyntacky,” she said to the boy who stood beside her.

“Yeah. I hope we raise some money for the families.”

“It’s a good cause.”

“The best. Me and my mom could have done with some of that kind of help.” The words held no emotion, but Autumn knew he felt it.

“I’m sorry—I wish you’d had help too.”

He shot her a smile. “I was lucky and got saved. Others aren’t.”

Autumn knew many suffered and had seen kids who needed help in her classrooms. “I’m glad you got help.”

“I have a family now. A big one.”

“I always wanted siblings,” she said as she watched Ford lift Ritchie onto his large horse.

“Yeah, it’s pretty cool even if I came to them late in my lifetime.”

“They’re good people, those Trainers.”

He nodded. “Relax. Ritchie will be okay. Ford will never allow anything to happen to him. He’s a good guy.”

“I know, but you can’t help but worry when you see your child perched up there.”
