“Nice. I’m sure she loved them. Got any coffee?”

She seemed nervous, uncertain again. He knew what they’d done wasn’t something Autumn had experienced in a while. Neither had Ford. He’d hooked up with women, but it hadn’t meant anything, unlike what they’d just shared.

“Sure.” She reached up for a mug, and the hem of the robe rose, showing him more skin.

He moved in behind her, bracing his hands on the counter. Caging her inside his arms.

“You’re unsure—I get that—but I’m no different. How about we don’t overthink this and see how it goes?” He pushed aside her hair and kissed the skin just below her ear. Her shiver had him smiling.

“Okay.”

“When is Ritchie home?”

She turned with the mug between them. Ford took it, placing it behind her on the counter.

“He… Uh… He… is sleeping over. Joe’s going to call me if he wants to come home, but so far he’s happy.”

“Why does that make you sad?”

“It doesn’t. Not really. But this is his first sleepover with a friend. I guess it’s just hard to accept he’s growing up.” She looked down.

“Yeah, I can imagine that’s difficult. My mom still struggles to let us go. In fact, she told me today she wouldn’t make my favorite cobbler because I’d been naughty.” He said it to make her laugh.

“What did you do?” She looked up at him, and he felt it again, the heat in his chest as he looked in those big green eyes.

“Let’s go sit in that chair with some coffee and cake; then I’ll tell you.”

She had hers black while he loaded cream and three sugars into his.

“Ewww.” Her nose wrinkled.

“What can I say? I like sweet things.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“That was cheesy.”

“Got any of that cake left? That knitting club is weird, but the food was good.”

“I thought they were wonderful but definitely weird. This town just kind of wraps itself around you whether you want it or not. I love it.”

“Nash told me he hated it when he first moved close, but he’s part of it now.”

She grabbed her coffee and went with him into the living area.

He moved a small table closer and lowered his mug, and she did the same. Ford sat; she hesitated, so he grabbed her hand and tugged her into his lap and then pulled the lever, which had them reclining into a more comfortable position.

She sat between his legs, tense.

“Relax.”

“I haven’t done a lot of this type of thing,” Autumn said.

“Cuddling?”

She nodded.

“Was your ex a douchebag to you?” Ford opened a container. “I didn’t see the chocolate muffins before.”

“You sound like my son.”
