“They look like something that would come out of my horse’s nose,” Jack added.
“Mandy, you need to stage an intervention!” Luke called to her.
Ford watched the Robbins sisters’ niece move to the edge of the court beside Autumn.
“Ted’s shoes,” Luke added, waving at them. “They’re terrible.”
“He has to have some flaws, he’s so good at everything else,” Mandy said, blowing her man a kiss.
“That’s my girl.” Ted smirked.
“So it’s true. Love is blind,” Ford said.
“I just threw up in my mouth,” Fin added.
“If we are ready?” Albert called.
Ford’s team won, and all players were dripping with sweat when the game finished.
“Six men stay on the court for the women to practice against,” Mayor Gripper said. “And play nice.”
Ford stayed. If Autumn was playing, so was he. He was joined by Nash, Fin, Joe, Nixon, and Ted, the latter because he was so hopeless it would mean they played with five players.
“Those shoes are sure getting a workout, Ted,” Nash said.
“I can send you a link to the website if you want a pair.”
“I’d rather walk barefoot for the remainder of my life.”
Autumn moved to stand on the other side of the net, facing Ford while the debate behind him blew up again about Ted’s shoes.
“Everything okay, Autumn?”
“Yes, thank you,” she in a polite schoolteacher’s voice that had his fingers itching to grab her and haul her under the net so he could kiss her. “Nick is leaving Ryker Falls.”
“Why was he here?”
“It’s complicated.”
“Most things relating to exes are, or so I’ve heard.”
She frowned but didn’t add anything, and Ford thought this wasn’t the time or place to push her.
“You any good at volleyball?” he asked.
“I think so.”
“Think so?”
“I was okay in college.”
“Stop talking to the opposition,” Nash said and turned to Luna. “Hey, baby, you look hot.”
She blew him a kiss.
Maggie stood beside Autumn, and next to her was Quinn. Behind them were Piper, Mandy, and Luna.
“Enough chat, let’s play. Show them what you’re made of, girls!” Albert called.
