“Now start supporting your team,” her friends said together.

Birdie ignored the stares around her and looked at the field. Sawyer was staring at her, clearly having seen the action. She couldn’t read his expression from here but thought it was amused.

“You need to support your man, Birdie,” Dr. Hannah said from two rows down.

“Exactly right,” Bart replied.

“Your face is the color of a beet,” Nina said, handing Birdie the travel mug. “Get that down you. You’ll forget about anything then but that big handsome man giving you the eye.”

She gave up arguing and took Nina’s second mug. Swallowing a mouthful, she gagged.

“Good, right?” Nina looked smug.

“It’s like firewater. Is there any coffee in there?”

“Some. Now focus on the game.”

Jed had been struck out, as had Jay, Dan’s friend.

“I think he’s the best looking one out there,” Nina said.

“Who, Jay?” Cill asked.

Nina nodded. “He’d make a girl very happy, I’m sure of it.”

Birdie giggled.

Zoe got to first base. Sawyer was the next batter.

“Go, Sawyer!” Tommy called. “Besides Daddy, he’s my favorite,” the boy said, reaching for another handful of popcorn.

“Why is he your favorite?” Birdie kept her eyes on Sawyer as she asked the question.

The man turned her inside out, and she didn’t know what to do about it.

“He lets me pat his dogs,” Tommy said.

“Girl, you got it bad,” Nina whispered in her ear.

Birdie didn’t agree or disagree. She knew Nina was right.

The lead changed through the first five innings, and she tried not to spend all her time watching Sawyer, but her eyes kept going back to him.

He was batting now. Birdie watched him hit the third pitch, and it went long. Zoe took off to second, and Sawyer rounded first base, following her. Calvin Keller picked the ball up and hurled it to third, but Zoe was safe. Sawyer was heading into second where Beau Keller stood.

She held her breath as he slid in, and the ball came at the same time. Beau reached out a glove and stood in Sawyer’s way. They both went down hard in a tangle of limbs.

The crowd held their breath until the umpire called Sawyer safe.

“Birdie!”

Her mom and dad were waving to her from below the stand. Handing Ruby to Nina, she then gave the bag of popcorn to Tommy.

“I’ll be back. I just need to see what my parents want.”

“Probably to watch the game,” Cill said with her eyes locked on the field.

“Maybe, but they haven’t been in a while.”Not since their children stopped playing.
