Birdie walked out, and they both rose to their feet. Nina was now hugging Woodrow.

“This is coming from a place of love again, Birdie,” Cill said. “But that is something my grandmother would have worn in the sixties.”

“I think we need more wine and cake,” Nina said, lowering the cat to the floor. “Go back to your room and remove those fashion disasters ASAP.”

She should be insulted, instead Birdie felt a little flash of excitement. She hadn’t had girl time since Leah left.

Between them, Cill and Nina had brought six dresses for Birdie to try, plus some other clothes that apparently she’d need to wear during the day.

“I have clothes for that,” Birdie protested.

“No, you don’t,” Nina said.

They lounged on her bed while she changed. After the embarrassment of them seeing her underwear, she enjoyed the experience.

Her sister wasn’t home often, and when she was, Blue Jay wasn’t really a girlie girl. She and Birdie were different people entirely. Her mom tried but loved making clothing from whatever she could find around the house. Mainly kaftans.

“Tell me you have nice underwear, Birdie?” Cill said the words into Woodrow’s neck as he was snuggled with her and Nina on the bed.

“Who’s going to see it?” Birdie pulled on the dress Nina thought would be perfect on her.

“It’s not about who sees it, it’s about making you feel good while wearing amazing lingerie,” Nina said.

“Sure, if you say so.” The dress she’d pulled on was a sky blue. Sleeveless with straps and fitted from bust to mid-thigh where it stopped with a floaty hem. Simple, and it felt like she was naked. The fabric was so light.

“OMG!” Cill shrieked.

“Are you kidding me?” Nina sighed. “You look… I can’t even with you in that dress, Birdie.”

Birdie stared in the mirror. It was her, but it didn’t look like her, and there seemed to be lots of skin showing.

“It’s too short.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. You’re twenty-eight, not sixty. Didn’t you grow up with parents who enjoyed being sky clad?” Cill said.

“What do you know about being sky clad?” Birdie asked.

“I read books about that kind of thing… well, not that kind of thing, but witchy books that talk about being sky clad,” Cill amended.

“You look amazing, Birdie,” Nina said, “and I’ll add to that you have a killer body. This is the dress you should wear to the rehearsal dinner.”

“I don’t think I’ll be going to that. It’s for people close to the bride.”

“Of course you will. You’re Sawyer’s date,” Nina said.

“I’m not his date in the real sense of the word. More like a fake date.”

“Whatever.” Nina flicked her fingers. “Look at yourself. This is the kind of thing you should wear. Stop hiding.”

Birdie studied herself. Her clothes were usually looser and longer. Another shiver of excitement told her that more than just her lifestyle should change. Her clothes could do with an overhaul too; Nina and Cill were right.

“I tried your shoes on before. We’re the same size,” Nina said. “Try these on. The color is nude.”

“I’m not a complete novice. I know what nude is, colorwise I mean,” she added quickly, which had the girls laughing.

The wedge heels had small straps and made her legs look longer.

“Wedge heels are easier to walk in,” Cill said. “I have the perfect clutch to go with this outfit.” She left the room, presumably to grab the bag.
