“Really? That high?”

“Give or take a few feet.”

“What’s that?” She jabbed her finger at the window.

Leaning closer, he looked at the rock formation. “Craggy Peak.”

“Really? Wow, it’s different from up here,” she said to the window.

“Because we’re flying about 5,000 ft above it,” he drawled.

She asked him questions the entire way, which he did his best to answer. Brody shot him a look that to Sawyer seemed like a smirk, and his mother and uncle looked happy. Not wanting to delve into the whys to any of that, he ignored his family, which was his standard way of dealing with most things.

“I’ll be pissed off with you again when we land,” Birdie said.

“I can deal with that.”

“But thank you for this, if nothing else, Sawyer. I didn’t think I’d get on a plane anytime soon.”

“Welcome,” he grunted.

“Even if you’re an asshole.”

Chapter16

Birdie had never dreamed flying could be like that. The feeling of leaving the ground, and then seeing everything grow so tiny below. She’d had to talk to Sawyer about it because she always talked when she was excited. He’d been patient and answered all her questions, and she had to admit she’d been surprised by that. He wasn’t known for his patience in Lyntacky.

The landing had been fun too, and now they were in a van heading to Ryker Falls to meet up with Sheriff Dans’s daughter, Autumn, and the rest of Sawyer’s family.

He was beside her, and next to him was his niece. The girl had been talking to her big uncle the entire trip, and he’d been gentle and patient with her too.

It was another side to the man she’d never seen before. Maybe she wasn’t the only one who had gone into hiding after they’d had their hearts broken.

Had Jolena broken Sawyer’s heart? It seemed likely, as he had her name tattooed on his arm, and she was no longer around.

“Relax,” he said.

“I’m relaxed.”

A large hand settled on her bare knee that she hadn’t realized she was jiggling.

“No. You’re not.”

Heat shot through her at the contact.

“I told you that you don’t get to order me about. I’m not one of your family members, Sawyer.”

“You think they let me order them about?” He removed his hand but not before his fingers skimmed up her leg. Birdie was sure that had been an accident. Sawyer didn’t even like her, so why would he touch her?

Ally spoke, which drew his attention back to her.

“Uncle Sawyer may seem grumpy, but he’s not really. Not with family,” the girl said.

“That’s enough out of you, squirt.” He got his niece in a headlock and then stuck his fingers into her ribs, making her giggle.

“So, Birdie. Have you been to Ryker Falls before?” Sheriff Dans asked.

“No. This is my first time.”
