Sliding to the floor, she wondered what the hell she was going to do now.

Chapter20

Sawyer needed sleep. It was how he functioned. Ryder and Brody could handle three hours and be bright and alert. Sawyer had never been like that. Lack of sleep made him even more of a bear.

It was her. Birdie McAllister had given him a sleepless night.

He’d told her more about himself than he’d told anyone. She had a way of getting him to talk, and then he’d kissed her.

“What the fuck? Ya Ya, move your size 13s!” Dan roared at him when a ball shot past Sawyer.

His brothers had woken him early to play ball with the Ryker boys. The Trainer brothers, all three, were smirking at him, as was the head ranger in Ryker Falls, Fin Hudson. Nash was here too, but his brother wasn’t. Apparently, Autumn had told him if he had a broken nose for the wedding photos, she was divorcing him.

“Ya Ya?” Joe Trainer asked.

“Fuck off,” Sawyer snarled.

“Our niece couldn’t say Sawyer, so she called him Ya Ya.”

“She’s allowed.” Sawyer jabbed a finger his way. “You’re not.”

“Well, wake up and we won’t have to,” Brody said, bouncing the ball his way.

He’d gone to sleep with the memory of Birdie’s body coming apart in his arms. The tightness of her pussy and roundness of her breast. A ball hit him in the chest. Luckily, he grabbed it and started dribbling to the net. Lobbing it at Dan, his brother jumped and slammed the ball in the basket.

“Better!” Brody called. Sawyer flipped him off.

He’d made Little Miss Sunshine come. She’d been so responsive, moaning and begging him for more. He’d wanted to give her more and would have if his brother hadn’t pounded on his door.

He’d been so hard he’d gone back to his room and straight to the shower again. That was twice she’d done that to him.

“Focus!” Ryder yelled at him.

“You got a problem, big guy?” Jack Trainer asked Sawyer.

“No.”

“You sure look grumpy today.”

The Trainers were in-your-face people. Raised bad but became good, they were always on someone’s case about something.

“Grumpier, adjective,” Joe, the oldest brother, said, bouncing the ball just out of Sawyer’s reach.

“Grumpiness, noun,” Luke, the youngest, added.

“What the fuck are you three on about?” Sawyer asked.

“We’re teaching Gracie about speech,” Jack said. “Grumpily is an adverb.”

“I’m going to rearrange your face, doing words,” Sawyer muttered.

“Nice. Who knew there was a brain behind all that?” Jack waved a hand at Sawyer. “Now let’s play ball because we have a wedding to attend.”

Pushing aside visions of Birdie, he focused. The game was fast, and they’d promised not to hurt each other, but he still gave a few good elbows and received some. When it was done, the Dukes headed back to the lodge for food and then to get ready for the wedding.

“What’s the deal with you and Birdie, Sawyer?”

“No deal,” he said to Ryder. “I told you why she’s here. I’m wishing now I’d just come alone.”
