“We will always pay our respects to Shelly. God rest her soul,” Nancy said.

“Do you think if we broke out some other moves anyone would mind, as long as we were square dancing?” Ryder asked.

“It would be a wrench,” Jett said.

“Someone could blow a gasket,” Lucas said.

“You guys still speak in plumbing terms?” Zoe asked.

They both smiled at her. The Hylands didn’t talk much and loved plumbing. It was a family passion passed down by their father.

Ryder took Nancy’s hand and started walking, cutting a path between J.D. and Zoe. Birdie was attached to Bart and Nancy held Sawyer’s hand. Birdie shot him a mutinous glare which was a better look on her than the sad one.

“How come Mr. Limpet and his buddies aren’t out here?” J.D. asked.

“They’ll plead deafness,” Bart said.

“Well then, they need to be locked up. Sawyer was,” Zoe said.

“Pretty sure they have been for repeat offending, but they enjoy it too much because it gets them away from their wives,” Bart said.

“I heard your mom say someone paid her four hundred dollars for something from her stall, Birdie,” Nancy said.

“I’m sure it was a mistake, but we can’t seem to find who the money belongs to,” Birdie said.

“It was put there for a reason, girl. You and yours use it. No one mistakenly leaves four hundred dollars unless they want to,” Bart added.

Sawyer could feel Ryder’s and Zoe’s eyes on him.

“Ouch!” J.D. howled.

“Well, don’t stop,” Zoe snapped at J.D.

“You weigh a lot more than you look like you should,” his friend said.

“You don’t say that to a lady,” Bart said as he rounded Sawyer, cutting between him and Birdie.

“Anyone actually,” Birdie added.

“I wasn’t rude,” J.D. snapped.

“Left, Rye,” Zoe said.

His brother got his left and right mixed up all the time.

“Thanks, Zoe. You leave my sister alone, pretty boy,” he said to J.D.

“I could take you, country boy. Any day,” J.D. said, smack talking.

“Lavina is hosting bridge tonight. She’s made that horrible veggie dish,” Nancy said.

“The one with pineapple?” Bart asked.

“I’ll take you on in the ring any time,” J.D. said.

“Ring,” Ryder scoffed. “We don’t use a ring here, sweetheart. You go on back to the big city you came from if you need that kind of protection.”

“Linda is bringing coconut creme pie, so that’s something,” he overheard Nancy saying.
