Lauren snorted. “Hell, they’re black ops boys. It’s all they know how to be. It will be your job to train them to be civil.”

Sky grinned and sat down. “Don’t you want to go out there and carouse with them? You were black ops, too?”

Giving the group a hard look, Lauren shook her head. “No thanks. I like having girl time with you. Much more intelligent, quiet conversations, thank you very much,” and she toasted to Sky and took a sip of her wine.

“Hey, how are you getting along with Alex?” It had been a week since their fateful meeting at the office. Sky saw Lauren’s face go blank. Uh oh… when she put her game face on, she knew it hadn’t gone well.

“I’m just thanking my lucky stars he isn’t coming out here for another three days,” she drawled.

“That bad, huh?”

“He’s on my training roster for upgrading his shooting skills. The type of weapons he’s used to using, we don’t carry. So he has to requalify and get real friendly really fast with our weapons.”

“Is he that bad?”

“No,” Lauren said. “Actually, and don’t you DARE tell him this, he’s a damned good shooter. He was a trained sniper in Spetsnaz, a back-up in case the main snipers were put out of commission. He trains easily, gets it first time around, and he’ll hit ten out of ten bullseyes. Jack is very pleased with him.”

“Then why aren’t you happy?”

Squirming, Lauren griped, “He gives me moon eyes.”

“Moon eyes?” Sky grinned.

Sitting up, Lauren took a huge gulp of wine and set her glass on the coffee table. “You know I work with training security dogs, right? And I also devote time to the Humane Society?”

“Yes.” Sky could hardly wait to hear how moon eyes and dogs went together. She’d never heard the term.

“You know those big, sad-eyed looking dogs? Like St. Bernard’s?”

“I’ve seen them, yes.”

“Well,” she huffed, “Kazak sometimes gives me one of those looks, you know? Moon eyes. Big sad, soulful looking eyes. I swear to God, the guy could make a flower bud and bloom by just looking at it,” she groused.

Sky said, “Oh… I see now…”

Giving her a dirty look, Lauren growled, “You see WHAT?”

Covering her mouth with her fingers, Sky tried not to smile but Lauren caught her at it anyway.

“What is so funny, Sky? You’re sitting there like you know something. Spill it?”

“Oh, nothing I can say is a fact,” she parried, holding her friend’s unhappy stare. “Why does it bother you?”

“It irritates the hell out of me!”

“Really?” Sky’s brows rose and she couldn’t help but smile. “Honestly? It does, Lauren?”

“Yeah.” She glared at Sky. “So what?”

“It just seems that if you were immune to Alex, it wouldn’t matter how he looked at you. You’d have NO reaction. Right?”

Lauren suddenly moved and flicked her hair across her shoulder. “You’re reading too much into this, Sky. You’re head over heels in love with Cal and you’re starry eyed. You see love everywhere. Even when it’s not there, you’re misinterpreting it.”

“Maybe,” Sky allowed, seeing how twitchy Lauren had suddenly become. She couldn’t sit still, had got up and started pacing the length of the room like a caged lioness.

“Well, how else is Alex doing at Shield?” Sky thought talking business instead of touchy-feely topics with Lauren might calm her down. She’d never seen her friend nervous like this before.

“Jack’s been congratulating himself on hiring Kazak. He’s a combat medic and apparently, a very good one. We’re always needing medics, so he’s filling a big hole we have in our company roster. Actually, we can use two more and I’ve talked to Jack about that. He’s in agreement.”
