An iPad! Sky kept her face very still. Would it have email capability? Internet access? How far did Alexandrov really trust her? “I would love to have books to read,” she said, her voice full of emotion. This time, she was being completely honest with him.

Nodding, Yerik murmured, “Well, as always, it depends upon you, Sky. I’m a very kind and generous man, as you know. If you continue to be compliant, to treat this villa as your new home, you will never want for anything. I have taken excellent care of you, and I will continue to do so. More than anything,” he delved into her widening eyes, “I want you HAPPY.”

A lump stuck in Sky’s throat. What would make her happy was to find her way back to Cal. To be in his arms. To have a life with him. Not this oily monster who pretended to be nice when she knew damned well he could order her killed with a snap of his fingers. The need to escape overwhelmed Sky. Somehow, she had to get out of here. She didn’t want any surgical procedure. She felt as if she were being maneuvered into something she didn’t want to do.

CHAPTER 16

July 12

At noon thenext day, Allegra went to her office to find a moment’s respite to think about Don Tobar’s threat to her and her family. She was in complete emotional turmoil over the man’s unexpected threat. Something was terribly wrong with the situation regarding Sky. What if she didn’t want the abortion? Did the woman even know she was pregnant? Allegra didn’t think so. She had just set down at her desk when Maria knocked at the door and entered.

“I’m so sorry, Doctor,” she said, standing unsurely in the entrance to her office. “There are a man and woman out here who say it is urgent that they speak to you. A Jim and Emma Anderson?” She gave Allegra a pleading look. “They are insistent that it is important, that you must see them immediately.”

“What?” Allegra muttered. She frowned. “Oh, send them in.” Maria looked relieved and opened the door fully, gesturing for the couple to come into her office.

Allegra saw a tall, well-dressed couple enter. The woman was a stunning redhead dressed in a cream-colored pantsuit and emerald silk blouse that matched the color of her wide, gorgeous eyes. The man was casual, in a loose white short-sleeved cotton shirt, Levi’s and sneakers. Alarms went off in Allegra and she didn’t know why. She stood up and offered her hand as they approached her desk.

“I’m Dr. Allegra Zapata.”

Cal took the doctor’s thin, long hand. “Jim Anderson. This is my wife, Emma.” He released her hand and added, “We’re very grateful you would see us on such short notice.”

“Nice to meet you, Emma. Please, both of you, sit down,” and Allegra gestured gracefully to the two chairs in front of her desk.

“Thank you, doctor,” Lauren said, giving her a slight smile while shaking her hand. She sat down next to Cal.

As Allegra took a seat, she saw the man’s hard face, his light gold-brown eyes were completely unreadable. He pulled two photos out his wallet. He got up and slid them in front of her.

“Have you seen either of these two people, Doctor?” Cal stood, watching the doctor’s face. Allegra frowned and pulled the small color photos closer.

“Oh,” she whispered, “yes, I know both of them. This is Sky Lambert and that is Don Tobar.” Confused, she looked up into the man’s expressionless face. Allegra realized something else was going on here. This was not a couple with a fertility issue.

“Where is she?” Cal demanded, his heart taking off in hard, wild beats.

“Why,” Allegra stumbled, unsure, “she is at La Paloma. She lives with Don Tobar up near the volcano, Arenal. Excuse me, but who ARE you?” and she gave them a confused look. For a moment, Allegra saw the man’s face thaw, saw something in his eyes she couldn’t interpret.

Cal pointed to the male in the photo. “You called this man Don Tobar?”

“…Yes. Why?”

“Because his real name is Yerik Alexandrov. He’s the leader of the Russian mafia in New York City,” Cal told her. He saw Allegra’s face fall and the immediate terror in her eyes as she sat back, wrapping her arms around herself.

“How do you know this? Who ARE you?”

Cal tried to remain calm. Sky was here! She was with Alexandrov! She was so close… so close… “That woman, Sky Lambert, Dr. Zapata, is my fiancee. She was kidnapped off a beach in San Diego three and a half weeks ago.” His voice turned to a growl. “Sky and I were to get married the next day. We’ve been trying to find her. We picked up some suspicious communications that led us to you and decided to come see you.”

Gasping, Allegra sat forward, shocked. “YOU were going to marry Sky?”

“Yes. Why?” Cal demanded, watching the doctor pull over a file.

“Because she’s nearly two months pregnant, Mr. Anderson. With, I’m assuming, your baby?”

Stunned, Cal blinked. He wasn’t prepared for this. “Sky’s pregnant?”

Allegra gave him a frown. “I examined her a week ago. She’s pregnant. All the tests confirmed it.” She saw the man flinch, saw raw grief in his eyes for a split second. And then the emotion was gone, replaced by that same hard, expressionless mask. She tapped the file with urgency. “You must know that Don Tobar wants me to abort her fetus four days from now. He wants her impregnated with his sperm. He wants Sky to carry HIS baby.”

Lauren gasped, sitting up in the chair, hands gripping the arms. “What the hell are you talking about? That’s SICK!”

Allegra heard the woman’s husky voice turn to outrage. She looked at them and placed her hands protectively over Sky’s file. “I’m telling you nothing more until you tell me who you really are. This is privileged medical information.”
