Time had flown by, and now with the dishes cleaned and put away, the evening was winding down. Sara didn’t want it to end.

“Thank you for dinner.” Cari hugged her.

“And thank you for helping with the cleanup.” Sara smiled at her sister.

Cari nudged her sister and then nodded toward the guys on the couch with Oreo in between as they watched football on her big screen TV. “Looks like they have something in common.”

“I have a feeling they’ll be watching many more games together.”

Cari nodded. “Me too. But we should get going. It’s getting late, and tomorrow will be a big day.”

“And another big meal.” Not that Sara minded all of the cooking. She loved having her whole family together. Cooking for them was a pleasure. As for the clean-up, it wasn’t so much of a pleasure, but she’d do it again and again if it meant having her loved ones in one room.

“Adam, it’s time to go.”

“Hang on one second. I just have to see if they make this kick.”

A couple seconds later, there was cheering from the couch. Their team must have made the kick. There was another round of hugs followed by thank yous and then goodnights. Cari and Adam were off to the Brass Anchor Inn for the night.

Sara closed the door and turned to Kent. “It was a wonderful evening, wasn’t it?”

He smiled at her. “I’ve never seen you so happy.”

“I’ve never had all of my loved ones in one place. I can’t imagine Christmas getting any better.”

Kent arched a brow. “Are you sure?”

“I don’t know. What do you have in mind?”

“I’ve been waiting all day to do this.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a black velvet box. He got down on one knee and opened it. A giant diamond solitaire twinkled at her. “Sara, you are my best friend. I can’t imagine my life without you in it. I love you with all of my heart. Will you marry me?”

Tears of joy blurred her vision. “Yes. Yes, I will. I love you too.”

Her hand trembled when he slid the ring onto her finger. It was a little big, but it didn’t matter to her. All that mattered was that he loved her and she loved him. The rest of it they’d work out.

He straightened and pulled her into his arms. She was staring at the sparkling ring as he drew her closer. Her hand pressed to his chest.

She lifted her gaze to meet his. “Only you could take a perfect evening and make it even better.”

He pressed a kiss to her lips. She was the luckiest woman in the world. Just wait until she told her sister. But as Kent deepened the kiss, she realized that announcing their engagement could most definitely wait.

“Meow.”

Cat claws dug at her pants. She grudgingly pulled away from Kent and glanced down to see Oreo leaning against her leg.

She bent down and picked him up. He’d grown a lot over the past six months. He was no longer a little kitty. He was now long and lanky.

“Meow.”

Kent pet Oreo’s head. “What’s the matter, buddy? Are you jealous? Afraid I’m going to take up too much of your mom’s time?”

She hugged Oreo, who let out one of his loud purrs that sounded more like the rev of a small engine. “Don’t worry. I have enough love and time for both of you.”

Kent draped an arm over her shoulders. “I can’t wait to make our family official.”

“Me either. What about a spring wedding?”

“I don’t know. Can you make arrangements that fast?”

“I don’t want anything fancy. Although I do want my sister there.”

“I understand. You talk to her and see when she can come back. All you have to do is give me a date, and I’ll be there.” He leaned over and pressed a kiss to her lips.
