“My father knew.” A fresh wave of pain tightens her features.

No more lies.

“I know.”

“I wanted to kill him. I wanted to take out my gun and put a bullet in his head.” She says it with such conviction that I fear for her. If she ever did, she would die.

“I’m so sick and tired of following everyone’s rules when what I truly want…” Her hand drags down my chest. “Is us. Our revenge.”

Us?Her gaze darts across my face, and the vulnerability and rawness I see in her expression have me reaching out and gripping the back of her neck to pull her tightly against me. I press my forehead against hers. I want to kiss her mouth. The downturn of the corners makes me think she might cry. I don’t want her to cry.

I took the world from her. Now I want to give it back in any way possible.

My hands slide up to cup her face.

“You have my word,” I finally say and kiss her. “I’ll find out who’s running the Pits.” A tear falls slowly from her eyes, and I lean in and press a kiss against one eyelid. I lick the salt of her tears off my lips. “And I will destroy the person responsible.” I kiss the other eyelid.

“We. Will destroy the person.” Carina’s words are fierce, and I’m so fucking proud of the woman she is.

I let my hands slide from her face and take hold of her medallion. I don’t burst into flames like I imagined I would. I bring the medallion to my lips. “Together,” I whisper and kiss her pendant.

For Francis.

“Was he scared?” Carina’s question is a whisper.

I place the medallion gently between her collarbone. “No. He knew one way or another he would die.” My throat and eyes burn, and I want to glance out at the city, but instead, I focus on Carina. My hands ball into fists. The hands that took his life. “I wasn’t going to do it. I couldn’t. He said if he left there alive, they would kill him. He didn’t leave me a choice, Carina—”

Carina’s soft hand touches my cheek, stopping the flow of words. “I understand. I’m glad it was you.” Tears fall from her eyes. “No one else would have made it quick.”

I press my lips to her cheek and am surprised to feel the dampness of my pain there. “It was quick,” I whisper.

I’m waiting for Francis to say something snide in my mind, but there’s silence. Thinking about it, I realize he’s been silent for some time now.

“We do this for him.” That fierce tone is back in Carina’s voice. She grabs my shoulders and forces me to bend to her, placing kisses on both my cheeks. I know she will taste my tears just like I tasted hers. Her tongue flicks out and runs along my cheek.

“I’ve never seen you cry.” Carina moves to the other cheek and repeats the action, running her tongue after my tears.

What she’s doing has my cock growing hard. When I glance into her eyes, I see a fire burning. She eases away, stepping backward toward the balcony and then turning and walking resolutely toward it.

“Carina—”

“I need new memories, Luca.”

I follow after her, gripping one arm at the threshold and pulling her toward me until both her hands land heavily on my chest. My tears are gone, and all I want to do is possess her, make those new memories and burn the old to ash.

“You want to hurt someone?” I ask.

Carina’s nostrils flare with temper. “I’m going to do more than hurt them. I’m going to kill them.”

My mouth slams down on hers. Our teeth clash with the intensity of the kiss. She pushes me back through the door of the balcony until I hit the rail.

“I’m going to end their lives,” Carina declares, nipping my lip.

The pain is instant, but she runs her tongue along my lip, soothing the sting.

“It has to be slow,” I state.

Carina smiles, but it’s vicious. “Painful.”
