But I need to fill the emptiness. We need our revenge.

My thighs begin to tremble, and Luca tightens his grip. As if he understands every dark thought, he plunges two long, thick fingers of one hand inside me, pressing the heel of his hand against my clit, and scissors them against my walls at the same time. It’s the final piece to the puzzle. The fullness of his fingers in my cunt and the motion send me hurtling over the edge. I cry out loudly and shake and shudder with the unwinding of my release. Luca brings me down with gentle, hungry laps until I’m limp and boneless.

Then he lifts me to sit completely on the narrow wall. My legs automatically go around his waist, ankles locking as I look behind me and go rigid.

There’s nothing at my back except wind and sky and city lights.

He holds my hips firmly in place, but I clutch at his neck and hair, fear sending me sliding my hips into his at the same time he lines us up and thrusts forward into me. I scream, a short, terrified burst of sound cut off by his lips.

He presses his forehead into mine and moves his hands to hold me more firmly against him. “Look at me, wild one.”

I can’t open my eyes. He repeats the command, the rough timber of his voice sinking under my skin and settling something inside me. I’m consumed by full-body trembling, a fear of falling like I’ve never experienced before grabbing hold and refusing to relinquish me. But I open my eyes.

“I won’t let you fall,” he tells me.

I shake my head, then nod.

“Do you believe me?” One hand travels down, coasting through my hair and along my spine to grip my right buttock, while the other brackets the back of my neck in a firm grip.

I draw in a short, shaky breath, then nod more decisively.

Trust. I have to trust him.

“Good. Think about us. What we’re going to do together.”

He pulls out, then slams back in.

My breath slams out on a sharp gasp. His gaze never leaves mine as he pulls out and repeats the gesture. Never lets me go.

“What we’re going to be together.”

Sweat drips from the bridge of his nose onto my face as he tilts me back a few degrees. “Look up,” he whispers.

As he thrusts again, I gather my courage and raise my eyes heavenward. The city swims around us, an ocean of lights that could be stars blurring into something beautiful and otherworldly.

“Let go.” He leans forward and kisses me as he fucks me hard there in that sky of lights. “Let go and let me love you, Carina.”

I swallow hard, and then I do it. Opening my fingers from the death grip I have on his neck, I let go.

I spread my arms wide, turning my palms up to the sky, and close my eyes and let go—not just of my fear, but of every ounce of anger and bitterness and resentment that linger still. They have no home here any longer.

We’ll have our revenge, but for now, I’m full. Full of the love Luca has replaced that hunger with.

When we both tumble over the edge moments later, we don’t fall.

We fly.

Chapter 23

Luca

“Isthisreallynecessary?”Carina asks. Her voice doesn’t carry its normal argumentative tone when she addresses me. Everything has changed since last night, and for that, I’m grateful, but I’m still trying to come to terms with our new dynamics.

We’re together. Again. The wild child turned Mafia queen and the Untouchable. We’re such an unlikely pair, and yet everything fits so perfectly. It’s difficult to even think about the time we wasted apart.

I turn so I can look her in the eyes as she waits for my answer. She’s in the back of the SUV, an arm curled protectively over Baccio, who sits in the seat beside her. I suppress a smile at what I’ll need her to do in a moment. I already know she won’t be happy at having to hide in the back of the car. She isn’t the type of woman to cower.

“Yes, it is. Everyone will think you’re at the Palisades estate. My apartment right now is the safest place you could be.”
