I need him. I need Ezra.

Kiwi.

Him.

I can’t survive this without him.

I scream his name again, louder.

I claw at the faceless man’s arm again, begging him to stop.

Something crashes and we turn our attention to it.

It’s him. On some instinctive level, I know it’s him. His body is nothing but a dark form, a silhouette against a fiery sunset backdrop, like Hades rising from the Underworld.

“Ezra!” His name is a broken sound, and his head shifts to the side.

There’s nothing remotely human about him. Nothing but a monster, a beast, ready to strike, ready to kill his prey.

The man’s hand tightens, his snarl ripping from his throat as he bashes my face into the wood again.

Kiwi doesn’t do anything.

He just stands there, his body vibrating with his fury. He tries to move, but an invisible force stops him.

I scream for him again, beg for him to save me, to help me.

He tries to take another step, but that wall keeps us separated.

The man suddenly falls, his face lifeless and featureless. A monster.

A true monster.

I try to crawl toward Ezra. He’s roaring as he bangs against the invisible shield between us, his body still nothing but a shadow. I claw at the wooden floor, splinters embedding under my nails as I try to move toward him—toward my savior.

A hand slides into my hair, roughly fisting it.

I turn toward Ezra again, but he’s disappeared. I scream for him again, my voice not thick with blood anymore.

Then the man slams my head into the wood, and I draw in another breath to scream.

A crash.

We look.

It’s a shadowed form—Ezra.

Everything starts over. A constant loop, forcing me to relive my terror over and over and over and—

“Kennedy!”

My eyes snap open with a loud gasp. Hands grip my shoulders, keeping me pinned. Sweat coats my skin as I frantically look around, my breath coming in harsh gasps.

I thrash against the damp sheets, trying to free myself of his hold.

“Mom.” I blindly turn toward Ian’s voice, feeling a different kind of panic fill my chest. My baby is here. The man is here, too. I have to protect Ian. “Mom, are you okay?” I search the dark room, trying to find him. Where is he? Why can’t I see? Why can’t I find him?

Then his large, cool hand slides into mine, and I look down, finding him kneeling beside my bed, his eyes so wide and terrified—like a little boy. A broken sob leaves me, and, finally, the hands on my shoulders drop away.
