“That’s probably the most sane thing you’ve ever said,” he laughs. My phone vibrates against my palm and I pull it out, finding a number I don’t know calling me.

“Gotta take this,” I say, and Axel jerks his chin at me as he turns toward Bash and Reid. I walk to the door and slip into the hall before answering.

“Kiwi?”

“Yeah? Who’s this?” I ask, my voice hard.

“Enzo,” he says. His voice is frantic and dread pools in my stomach. “It’s—Ian—my dad.”

“Where are you?” I ask as I take the stairs up three at a time. I grab my keys on the way out the door.

“My house,” he says. “My dad came—” There’s shouting, and I grit my teeth. “Stop!” My blood turns to ice at the terror in his voice. The line goes dead as I fling my leg over my bike. I turn the engine on as I call Kennedy. She answers on the first ring.

“Hey,” she says, sounding soft and light.

“Where does Enzo live?” I ask as I take off out of the parking lot.

“What?”

“Enzo, baby. Where does he live?” I try keeping my voice light, but I can’t. Not when I’m not even sure what I’m riding in to.

She rattles off an address, and I mentally look at a map of the city. It’s not far from the clubhouse. “Why? What’s going on?” I’m reluctant to tell her. A part of me wants to lie and say I’m just picking them up, but I can’t lie to her. Not about this.

“Enzo called me and said something’s going on with his dad and Ian.” She makes a choking sound, and it makes my heart squeeze.

“Ian?” she repeats. “He’s hurt?”

“I don’t know,” I say. “I’m heading there now.”

“Come get me,” she says hurriedly.

“It’ll take too long. I need to get to him.” There’s silence, and I hold my breath. I’ll argue with her on this one. I’m not leaving him alone longer than necessary, even if it’s to get her. I’d love to see what she’d do to Ezno’s father, but another time, when our boys aren’t in danger.

“Fine,” she breathes. “I’m at The Crossroads.”

“Alright,” I say. “Don’t worry, love. You trust me, right?”

“Yes,” she says, and shock ripples through me at the lack of hesitation.

“Then trust that I’ll protect him,” I say.

“I do,” she says, her voice thick. “Please, Ez—”

“I know, baby,” I say as I turn onto Enzo’s street. My stomach coils tighter as I scan the house numbers. “I’ll protect him.”

“I know,” she says. “Ez—I—”

“I’m here,” I say as I stop in front of the house. “I gotta go.”

I hang up before she can say anything else, and turn the bike off before sliding off it.

I stalk up the driveway, my eyes lingering on the beaten up truck parked there. I don’t bother knocking, I just kick the front door open. The wood splinters and flies everywhere as I stride inside. Immediately, I hear a fight from the back of the house.

I’ve never moved so fast in my fucking life.

I rush down the hall, and the sight in front of me makes me stop in the doorway, my heart stuck in my throat.

Ian, face bloody and eyes closed as he lays on the floor, but it’s Enzo that has my blood turning cold.
