His face loses all humor and his eyes darken in a way I’ve never seen before. The hair rises on my arms, and goosebumps ripple across my skin. I take a hesitant step back, feeling his mood shift instantly.

“I’m not a freak,” he says in a low, lethal voice.

“I—I just meant—” I take another step back when he steps toward me. “Ez?”

“Get back!” Ian shouts and we both turn our heads toward him. I don’t know if he ever went to his room, or if he’s stayed standing in the hallway the entire time. Either way, he shouldn't be here right now.

He rushes forward and pushes his way between us. His back presses against me, pinning me to the wall.

“Get out and stay away from my mom.” I peek around him and up at Ezra. He’s glaring at Ian, and a part of me is terrified he’s about to lose his shit.

“Do you remember what I told you earlier?” he asks in that same low voice.

“I’ll do it,” Ian says, his voice rising with each word. “I’m not bluffing this time.”

“What’s he talking about?” I ask, but they ignore me. Kiwi gives him a slow grin as he tips his head down, looking at him through his brows. Fear rips through my body. That look—that look is all Kiwi, no sign of the man, Ezra, in it. “Ian, move.” He pushes me harder against the wall, not letting me get out from behind him.

“Good,” Kiwi says. Ian’s hands ball into fists. They tremble as he brings them up.

“Wait!” I shout. “What the fuck is happening?” They still ignore me, so I shove Ian’s back, but he presses against me again. “You’re not fighting my fucking kid, Kiwi! If you touch him, I’ll fucking kill you!”

His eyes slide to me, and when our gazes lock, he takes a deep breath. He steps back and lets his grin fall.

“Get off your mom,” he says tiredly.

Ian doesn’t budge.

“Get off me, Ian.” I shove him again, but he doesn’t move. “Ian!”

“Get out of our house,” he sneers at Ezra. “Never come back. Leave my mom alone.”

“Ian,” I say again. I finally slide out from behind him and shove myself between them. They tower over me, but I press my hands against their chests, pushing them apart. “Get away from each other. You, go to your room.” I point to the hallway. “And you,” I turn toward Ezra, “get the fuck out.”

“I can’t,” he sighs. “It’s not safe.”

“What do you mean?” I ask. “For you, or me?” He drops his head forward and lets out another sigh.

“A couple Horsemen said they’re targeting The Berserkers to lure The Brotherhood out. I’ve already told Bash and Spencer, so they know what’s happening. I don’t know if anyone has seen you at the bar, and I’m not leaving you here unprotected. I’m not risking you.”

“I’m here,” Ian snaps. “I protect her.” My heart squeezes at the fireceness in his tone.

“I know you do, bud,” I whisper. But if Ezra is right, then they might’ve seen me there and they could have followed me home. I can’t risk anything happening to Ian. “If they come here, you save him first.” I stare up at Ezra, finding his lips tight.

“Kens,” he sighs, giving me a look that tells me he won’t.

“Please,” I say. “Please promise me you’ll save my son first.” I press my fingers harder into his chest, and watch his throat bob as he swallows.

“We don’t need him here,” Ian says. “I can protect you, Mom.” Ian side-steps me and tries to get between us again, but I don’t let him.

“How long will you be here?” I ask and Ezra shrugs.

“Few days, maybe a week. Just until I’m positive they’re not targeting you.”

“And that shit about this being your home?”

“It was a joke,” he says, his voice tight.

“I don’t want him here,” Ian says. “I don’t like you.” He shoves Ezra’s shoulder. “I don’t want you around my mom.”
