He pulls me closer to him, and I slide my leg between his, tangling our bodies together. And for the first time in my life, I break. I break so wholeheartedly that I fear I’ll never be put together again.

But I will be.

I will be because of him. Because Ezra will hold me through it, making sure my pieces don’t shatter completely. He’ll put me together again, and even though it terrifies me to give him that much power over me, over my heart, I decide I don’t care.

I decide to trust him.

Kiwi

Something flutters along my jaw, featherlight. Goosebumps ripple across my body and slowly, my eyes open. The sun blinds me, but it’s the woman next to me—the woman kissing my jaw, that has all my attention.

“Good morning,” I say, rolling onto my side to face her. She smiles lazily at me, her eyes softer than I’ve ever seen before. The side of her forehead is red and bruised, and the lump on it reminds me I can’t do what I want to do to her right now.

She slides her hand over my arm, her fingers tracing the lines of the tattoo on my shoulder, following them to my chest. I inhale sharply as she lightly circles my nipple with the tip of her finger.

Her eyes drop to my chest as she goes around and around, making me groan. My hand slides over hers, pinning it to my chest.

“You need to stop,” I growl. Her smile turns wicked, but when she winces slightly, my boner goes away. “You need to be asleep.”

“I’m fine,” she says, and I lift my brow. “Okay, I feel like I got hit by six buses. But I’ll be fine.”

“Of course you will be,” I say, gently brushing her hair behind her ear. “You always are.” Her eyes flick between mine, her expression unreadable. “I’ll make us some food. You just sit here and look pretty. Shouldn’t be too hard for you.” I wink, and she rolls her eyes.

“You need to brush your teeth,” she says, shoving my shoulder. I laugh as I lean forward, making kissing sounds before peppering her face with kisses. She groans and shoves me again, and when I pull away, she roughly wipes her cheek with the palm of her hand, scowling at me. “Why are your kisses so wet?”

“What?” I bark out a laugh, my hand on her hip tightening slightly. “I don’t have wet kisses.”

“Yeah,” she nods, scrunching her nose. “You have grandma kisses.” I huff out another laugh.

“You really know how to make a guy feel good, love,” I say as I slide out of bed. I press a quick kiss to her forehead, making sure to make it extra slobbery, and jump back before she can smack me.

Scratching my bare stomach, I walk through the apartment, fully expecting it to be empty. I abruptly stop when I meet Ian, a sandwich halfway to his open mouth.

“What are you doing home?” I ask, folding my arms and leaning against the wall. He lowers the sandwich and glances down the hall. “She’s still in bed.” His shoulders slump in relief.

“I didn’t want to leave her alone,” he says quietly.

“I’m here, kid,” I say, and he shrugs.

“I didn’t know.” He shifts on his feet, looking down the hall again. “I thought you’d leave this morning.” I shake my head as he speaks, then run my hand through my hair, yanking on the tangled curls.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I say, and he nods. “We told you last night—”

“I know,” he blurts. “I just didn’t believe it.” My brows raise, and he shakes his head. “No, Ididbelieve it. I just assumed she would wake up and kick you out again.” I snort a laugh as I push off the wall.

“The day’s not over yet, kid.” I clap him on the shoulder as I pass him on the way to the kitchen.

“Hey, Kiwi?” he says hesitantly, and I pause, my hand still on his shoulder.

“What’s up?” Our eyes meet, and a pit opens in my stomach.

He chews his lip as he glances down the hall again, then turns toward me. My hand falls to my side as I watch him struggle to find the words.

“Do you know how to fight?” he suddenly asks, and I blink at him.

“Uh.” I rub the back of my neck. How the fuck do I navigate this without Kennedy killing me? “Yeah. I do.” His eyes stay on mine, and honestly, it surprises me. He hasn’t found his confidence yet. “Why?” He looks over his shoulder again, and when he looks back at me, he takes a small step forward.

“Can you teach me?” His voice is low, almost inaudible. I narrow my eyes at him.
