Now, however, I want to fucking cut her for looking at Ezra. If I wasn’t such an idiot and demanded to know who he was fucking at the clubhouse, I wouldn’t have a problem with her. So call me jealous, or insecure, I don’t care. He’s mine, and right now, all I can think about is his dick inside her.

I feel Ezra’s stare on me, his body tensing as if he’s just remembered he told me about their hookup. He clears his throat and tries to wrap his arm around my waist, but I subtly shift my body away from him.

“You know Kens,” he says. “This is her son, Ian.”

“Hey,” Heather says, jerking her chin at him. I slide my eyes to Ian, finding his face bright red. I let out a sharp breath, and she looks back at me. “I haven’t seen you in forever.” Reid leans the boards against Ezra’s car and takes his place beside her.

“Yeah,” I mumble. “Been a while.” Tension fills our little group, and the look she gives Ezra makes me want to pop her fucking eyeballs out.

“I didn’t know your son was so…” She turns her attention to him, and I grit my teeth, my hands balling into fists at my sides. “Old. I thought he was a toddler or something.” She laughs, showing everyone her perfect teeth, and Ian chokes out a laugh.

“I’m sixteen,” he says, his voice deeper than usual. It takes all I have not to fucking laugh.

“In five months,” I say, and he shoots me a look that tells me to shut up, but I just lift my brow, waiting for him to argue. Wisely, he doesn’t.

“You’re letting him teach you to surf?” Reid asks, jerking his chin at Ezra. He leans against his car, his arms folded over his chest. Ian shrugs and tries to mimic his pose by leaning against Ezra’s car.

“I know a little bit.” I roll my eyes and look toward the water. “Are you going to surf with us?” There’s too much fucking hope in his tone, and I clench my jaw. I don’t need to look at him to know he’s askingher.

“I was planning on it,” Heather laughs. I keep my eyes on the water, not wanting to see her and Ezra look at each other anymore. “But I need to tan.” I press my lips together as I look back at her, finding her holding her arms out. “He won’t let me do it at the house.” She rolls her eyes as she points at Reid with her head.

“I don’t want everyone in the neighborhood watching you sunbathe,” he says unapologetically.

“I thought only Bash was a possessive caveman, but it seems to run in your blood,” she says, and the corner of his mouth curves. The look he gives her scorches even me, and I shift uncomfortably.

I’ve never felt so inadequate next to someone. I know I’m not ugly, but I’m not Victoria’s Secret level hot like she is.

“You’re welcome to hang out,” Ezra says, and I glance up at him. His shoulders are back and his face is tight, but his eyes…they’re soft.

“Can we get in the water now?” Ian asks, looking at Ezra too. Ezra laughs as he throws his arm around his shoulders, pulling Ian to his side like he’s done it a million times before. And the way Ian’s looking at him, like Ez hung the fucking moon, makes my chest tighten.

I feel like an outsider looking in. Like Ian isn’t mine anymore, like Ezra isn’t mine. I feel like the stray tagging along, like I’m not totally welcome.

“Sure thing, kid,” he says. “Are you getting in the water, too?” It takes me a moment to realize he’s talking to me and I straighten.

“Probably not,” I say, and try to ignore the way Ian’s face falls. “I’ll stay in the car. I can read—”

“Oh, don’t be silly,” Heather says, putting her hand on my arm. I snap my eyes to her, but she’s smiling. “You can’t sit in the car alone.”

“I don’t mind,” I say tightly.

“Come on,” she grins, “we can talk shit about Ezra.”

I run my tongue along my teeth as I slowly look up at him. He looks like he’s moments away from a panic attack, or bolting. Maybe both. Her hand slides off my arm as she laughs awkwardly.

“Or not,” she says.

Ezra and I stare at each other for a too-long moment, then I smile tightly.

“You know, that would be great,” I say. “I’d love to learn all of his secrets.”

“Will you get him set up?” Ezra rushes out as he looks at Reid. His brows flick up, but he pushes off the car and grabs a board.

“Come on,” he says, jerking his chin at the other board. Ian grabs it and holds it under his arm like Reid, then they make their way across the sand to the water. Heather lingers for a moment, her hands wringing together. I don’t try to hide my glare.

“If I did anything—”

“Can you give us a second?” Ezra says, his voice gentle. My teeth nearly crack. She glances at me again, then hurries after the boys. As soon as she’s out of earshot, I whirl.
