She watched me. “You’re in a good mood.”

“I am.”

My chest lit with warmth. Of course I was. The crippling guilt of owing the money had been lifted off my shoulders. Gabe Rivers had given me the most intense orgasm of my life and then solved all my financial woes in one night. The man was my savior. It was like emerging cleansed of my sins from a cool river. A Gabe river. Not that he knew he’d done any of that for me.

“Look, anyone who is anyone in football is going to be at this party. There could be some super-hot football guy ready to sweep you off your feet. This is your chance, Miri. You need to meet someone new and move on from Jed. You have to look the part.”

“This is not a hookup opportunity. I’m going to meet the other girls on the team.”

“That’s loser talk. This is absolutely a hookup opportunity.” Frankie waved a dismissive hand. “You can do both. Have you never heard of multi-tasking?” She threw her lipstick in her makeup bag and slapped my nails away from my mouth to stop me biting them. “Stop worrying. You look amazing. You can’t spend your life in sweatpants. Hold out your wrists.”

I presented my arms and she sprayed me with a cool vanilla mist. “Make sure you talk to people. Don’t sneak off to pet a dog.”

“I’m sure Gabe won’t let me do that. He won’t leave me alone until he’s got what he wants.”

Frankie raised an amused eyebrow and put her hand to her head. “Oh, how terrible to be wanted by a billionaire. What’s he like, anyway?”

I grabbed a cardigan from my wardrobe and pulled it over the revealing dress. “He’s quite … he’s not like what you read in the news. And he doesn’twant mewant me. Not in the way your dirty mind works. He needs a new player for his team. He’s very … nice.”

She smothered a smile. “Nice?”

I shrugged. “Nicer than you’d expect.”

“You mean you don’t think he’s a murderer?”

“He’s not a murderer. You do know that’s all ridiculous lies, don’t you?”

Frankie pulled the shoulder of my cardigan, trying to take it off me.

“Hey! What are you doing? I need this.”

She tugged the cardigan sleeves. “I didn’t make you this hot for you to transform yourself into a grandma.”

I gripped the cardigan in place. “I’m not taking it off.”

She stood back and shook her head. “Nope. It looks terrible.”

“It’s fine.”

She sighed. “Do you want to get laid or do you want to wear a cardigan?”

I couldn’t help my laugh. “Are those my only two options?”

Her eyes dropped over me and she nodded woodenly. “Yes, if that’s the cardigan then those are your two options.”

“Fine, I’ll take the cardigan.”

She swatted my arm. “You’re a lost cause, Miri Forster. I give up.” Her soft makeup brush tickled my cheek as she swept on pink blush. “Do you like him, then?”

“Who?”

She kept her tone light, but her bright eyes gleamed with interest. “Don’t play innocent. Do you like Gabe Rivers?”

What did it matter? Gabe was a celebrity. A porn baron’s billionaire playboy son who spent his evenings giving women in strip clubs amazing orgasms. No doubt he always had a different girl on his arm. I’d had one boyfriend before. Never any casual hookups. I wasn’t about to get my heart broken by a womanizer.

I looked up to find Frankie watching me. “He’s a beautiful man. It wouldn’t hurt to have a bit of fun, Miri. You don’t always have to take life so seriously.”

My stomach hardened. Things like this came easy to Frankie. She was cool and popular, an extrovert that took parties in her stride. I didn’t like to play dress-up and mingle. I liked to be in shorts and football boots, not dresses and heels.
