She burst out laughing. I couldn’t help the smile that pulled at my lips. Somehow, when she laughed it was with her whole face. It was hard to look away from. She peered through the kitchen window to the party inside before smoothing her dress over her thighs and sinking down to sit neatly on the step beside me. I leaned across and pulled a twig from her hair and swooped a stray curl behind her ear. Even in the moonlight I caught the blush that stained her cheeks.

She shot me a look. “Is something wrong?”

“Why would it be?”

“You’re sitting in the freezing cold and everyone else is in there.”

I held up my cigarette. “I needed a break.”

Her gaze fell on my cigarette and she frowned. “Oh.”

“You don’t approve?”

“I like to keep my body fit to play.”

“It’s a one-off. I wouldn’t usually, but the smell reminds me of Dad. I like it. Sometimes when I smoke, it feels … I don’t know. It’s stupid.”

She pulled her dress over her thighs and drew her knees to her chest. She flashed me a glance. “How long ago since he …?”

“Just over a year.”

A wrinkle appeared between her eyebrows. She brushed her golden hair over her shoulder. I let my gaze drift over her. A skimpy dress clung perfectly to her taut stomach and slim hips. She had the body of an athlete, strong and toned, with a feminine and wholesome beauty. My fingers itched to trace the freckles dotted in cinnamon constellations over her milky skin.

It was a terrible idea, but I couldn’t help thinking the sight of Miri Forster riding me could do something about this ache in my chest. I moved closer, inhaling her vanilla scent. She looked incredible in that dress. She’d look better without it.

She opened her mouth as if she might say more and closed it again. She chewed her pillowy lips and shot me another nervous glance. I leaned closer, watching her throat bob as she swallowed. I needed to keep this professional, but what mattered more than getting this woman in my bed tonight? Fuck it.

“I want to kiss you,” I said.

Her bright blue eyes widened. “I’m sorry?”

A jolt of amusement went through me at her look of surprise, but somehow I kept a straight face. “I want to kiss you. It’s all I can think about.”

“I thought you wanted me to join your team.”

“I do.”

“Kissing does not mix with professional relationships. It’s a terrible idea.”

“You’re right. It’s an awful idea.” I couldn’t drag my eyes away from her lips. “But I still think we should.”

Her lip twitched as though she was trying not to laugh. “I don’t.”

“Are you sure? We could get the camera crew over. Let’s give them something worth filming.”

She chuckled. “No.”

“You have the most beautiful laugh.”

“You say that to all the girls.”

“I do, but it doesn’t make it less true. You don’t want to kiss me?”

She blew out a breath. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a good idea or not. We can’t kiss if I’m going to play for your team.”

“Why not?”

She threw her hands up, but the smile hadn’t dropped from her lips. At least I was amusing her. “If you’re serious about the team, this can’t happen between us. You don’t always get what you want.”
