His voice was low and sad. “You don’t want to be involved with any of this. My life is drama. It gets ridiculous. I wake up and I have no idea what the papers are going to be saying about me or how many people are going to be piling onto me on Twitter. I can’t trust anybody. Every move I make is splashed all over the front pages. You want to stop this thing between us. I get it. It’s fine. You can go.”

“That’s not why I came.”

His elegant fingers caressed the neck of his beer bottle. “Why did you come?”

I took a breath. This wasn’t the time for declarations. “It doesn’t matter now. Are you okay? Is there anything I can do?”

His tired gaze fell on his palm in mine. He pressed a kiss to the back of my hand and his eyes locked with mine. “People are going to find out about us. We’ve been lucky so far. I don’t want to drag you into my world. It’s hectic.”

A barb speared my heart. Was this the speech? He was getting rid of me. Of course. It had only ever been one night. What was I thinking? “You don’t want us to spend time together anymore?”

Alarm crossed his face. He squeezed my hand. “No. I want to spend time with you.” He studied my face feature by feature. “I can’t ask it of you. It’s not fair.”

I chewed my lip. “What if I want to be with you?”

He took a sip of his beer. “Then one day you’re going to be part of a media circus.”

“What if I can handle it?”

He gazed at me speculatively. His green eyes shimmered with the light from the windows. “Can you handle it, Forster?”

Yes. No. Maybe. I took his hand. “For you. I’d try.”

His voice was calm, his gaze steady. “You will?”

“It’s not easy for me to let my guard down. I’ve been hurt before when I’ve done that, but I like you. It won’t be easy, but I want to try.”

Featherlike creases pulled at his eyes and his lips curved into a smile. Softly, he brushed a strand of hair away from my cheek. “I don’t want any secrets between us.”

Guilt prickled my neck. I didn’t want that either. Except I was keeping a secret from him. I’d worn a mask and a wig and pretended to be someone else. I had to tell him. This wasn’t the right time, but I had to.

I opened my mouth to speak, but his lips crashed down onto mine. With a hand at my waist, he pulled me toward him. He kissed me and I had no idea what this was between us or what I was doing, but he was right. This was chemistry. We had to be touching each other.

He lifted my top and his lips blazed over my chest, sucking my nipples into his mouth. His large hands gripped my waist and he yanked my jeans down beneath my hips. He dropped to his knees, tearing my jeans away and tossing them.

I grabbed his hair, stilling him. “There’s something we need to talk about.”

His lips blazed kisses across my inner thighs, his mouth hot through the thin cotton of my knickers. “No more talking. I need you.”

He pulled the material to one side and his tongue licked and probed at my sensitive flesh. My fingers dug into the couch. I couldn’t help my indecent groan.

His eyes locked with mine and he pulled me on top of him so that I straddled his face. Alarm went through me. I’d never felt so exposed.

“What are you doing? You’re going to suffocate.”

“I want you like this.”

Shock flew through me. “You can’t …”

“Why not?”

“It’s embarrassing.”

I tried to move away but he held my hips, gripping me hard enough to bruise. “You don’t have to feel shame with me.” His eyes locked with mine. “I’ve got you exactly where I want you.”

He pulled my knickers to the side and spread me with his thumbs before lapping a slow, hot line. My head fell back with a groan. Pleasure raced over every inch of my body. I could barely form words. I tried to get off him, but he pulled me back down so that I hovered over his face.

“Say that you’ll stay with me tonight,” he said.
