“Exactly. You boomers should have the upper hand. The strategy is to buy all the property and milk the plebs for rent. It shouldn’t be that much of an alien concept for you, Joyce.” Frankie held her hand out to receive Mother’s cash. “Pay up.”
Miri flashed me a smile from across the table. Warmth filled my chest. She frowned and stood. Something was wrong. I was out of my seat in seconds and by her side.
“What is it?”
Miri rubbed her expanding stomach and smiled. “Nothing. I need to stretch. My back hurts if I sit down for too long.”
Reece turned his head to watch her. “Do you want me to do the hot water bottle? Heat at the base of the spine will help.”
I moved behind Miri, rubbing her back in a gentle massage. “Here. Let me help you.”
She groaned with pleasure. “Oh. That’s good, but you don’t have to do that. Carry on playing.”
“You’re carrying our child. It’s the least I can do.” I took her by the elbow and led her to the hallway. “Come on. Let the children play. I’m going to run you a bath.”
She relaxed back, leaning into me. “I can’t wait until the new place is ready. Will everybody be okay without us?”
“The nurses are 24/7. We’ll only be down the road.”
“I feel so bad for Reece sometimes. I don’t want to leave him to do all this on his own.”
I kissed the top of her head. “He said he’ll be fine. We’ll be here if he needs us.”
She groaned and looked up the narrow staircase with trepidation. “I’m sick of waddling. I miss playing football.”
“You’ll be back out there in no time.” I held out my arm to escort her. “Soon we’ll have our own football team and we’ll be coaching them.”
She laughed and swatted my arm. “Let’s have one baby before we think about the next one.”
I squeezed her lightly. “No pressure. We can have one baby or a football team. As long as it’s with you, I don’t care.”
She returned my smile with a glint in her eye. We’d had to get creative with positions as Miri got bigger, but I knew what that that grin meant.
I whispered low in her ear. “I want you to strip for me tonight. The way you used to in the club.”
She hooted with laughter. “What? Look at the size of me.”
“You’re perfect. There’s more of you to love.” I wrapped my arms around her.
It was true, watching this woman’s belly swell with my child brought out my inner caveman. I couldn’t get enough.
I kissed the tip of her nose. “You’ve never been more beautiful.”
She sighed. “I’ve never been more uncomfortable.”
I took her by the elbow and helped her up the stairs. “Fine. Time for a bath. Let me watch you in there and I’ll pay you back with a foot massage.”
“You’re good to me, Mr. Rivers.”
“Because you’re mine, Little Swan. All mine.”
