I clambered to my feet, scrambling to run back to him, sliding to where his body lay, his leg twisted underneath him. But his eyes...

So stark, so blue.

Open and staring.

“Jeremiah,” I said, shaking him. “Jeremiah!”

Nothing.

No, no, no.

“No,” I yelled. I shook him. I begged and touched his face.

Nothing.

So I banged my fists on his chest with all the strength that I had.

He sucked back a breath, as if he’d been rebooted, and he blinked.

Then he groaned.

I sobbed, fisting his shirt, my forehead on his chest. “Jeremiah, just breathe, baby. Just breathe for me.”

He groaned again. The breath from his lungs sounded like an expiring tyre.

I stared at his face, making sure he could see me. “Baby, please. Stay with me, okay? You gotta stay with me.”

He groaned again. His breaths were shallow, raspy. He tried to speak. Then he tried to sit up but couldn’t. I shook my head. “Stay there,” I said. “Don’t move.”

He needed help, and I had three choices: get him onto the boat and drive him back to Darwin myself, put out a radio call for help, or call for a medevac.

Medevac, Tully. Now.

I needed a phone.

Mine was on the boat where I’d left it yesterday. We had no service here because we were on a remote island in the middle of the fucking ocean, and I hated the bloody thing anyway. Jeremiah’s phone was in his pocket because he’d been taking photos... I patted him until I found it and pulled it out... it was hot. And completely dead. No, not dead. It was fried.

Fuck!

Wait. The satellite phone.

On the boat.

Dammit.

“Jeremiah, listen to me,” I said. “Stay right here. Don’t try and move. I’ll be right back.”

He groaned.

I didn’t want to leave him, but I had no choice.

I sprinted for the jetty, not caring about which boards I trod on. I made it to the boat, ripped the door open, and found the phone in the console—seeing the emergency beacon and flipping it on—before racing back to Jeremiah.

He was now half sitting up, which probably was a good sign, but as soon as I slid in the dirt beside him, he fell back to the ground.

Christ.

I dialled 000, trying to stay calm.
