“Tully?”

“Oh, hey,” he said, quickly taking my hand. “You’re awake. You sound better.”

A hand touched my other shoulder. So gentle. “Oh, Jeremiah, we’ve been so worried.”

Mrs Larson.

She was here?

Tully snorted. “Mum’s here. Dad and Ellis too, but they just went to get some drinks.”

I still couldn’t see, but my back hurt. Not like before. But as if I’d been lying down too long.

“Need to sit up,” I said, trying to do exactly that.

I felt stiff and sore all over, and my head was woozy. My chest felt jittery.

“No, stay there,” Tully said. “I’ll go get the doctor.”

He dropped my hand and Mrs Larson patted my other arm. “Oh, we’re so glad you’re okay. Tully’s been out of his mind with worry,” she said softly. “We made him go home and shower, at least, because he stank. But he came straight back.”

“How long...?”

“You were brought in this morning. It’s now after six in the evening.”

I tried to get my head around that.

“Do you remember anything?”

I tried...

“Just Tully.”

Mrs Larson cry-laughed. “Of course.” She patted my arm again. “You were brought in by medevac helicopter.”

Helicopter?

I had flashes of being carried. Men with white helmets...

I shook my head.

I was dizzy and my heart felt fluttery.

Mrs Larson spoke quietly. “Tully called it in, then drove the boat back. I think he broke the speed barrier, but you’re both okay and that’s all that matters.”

I wasn’t sure what to say. Everything seemed so hazy.

“Oh,” Mrs Larson said. “Before the doctor gets here, Tully told them you were married so they’d allow him to stay. Just so you know if the doctors or nurses refer to your husband.”

My what?

“Husband?”

She patted my arm. “Shh.”

“Oh, Mister Overton,” a strange woman’s voice said. “You’re awake.”

“It’s doctor,” Tully said. “Doctor Overton.” A brief pause. “Oh, he’s not a medical doctor. He’s a genius doctor.”
