“He was good. He’s getting better, though he didn’t sleep too well last night.” I sighed. “He said he doesn’t wanna go storm chasing anymore. He said he doesn’t wanna risk gettin’ hurt again because of me.”

Mum gave me a sad smile. “He’s had quite a scare, love. And he saw how it affected you. I’m not surprised he’s having second thoughts.”

Ellis completely dismissed it. “Oh please. Give him two weeks and he’ll be back out there on the patio watching storms with you. He gets that same stupid, excited look on his face you get when thunder starts to roll.”

I snorted. “Gee, thanks.”

Mum gave a pointed nod to my computer. “You know you can just leave that.”

“I know. But it helps to feel productive.” I checked my watch again. “I gotta head back soon anyway. I told him I’d be there as soon as they’d let me see him.”

“Did you want me to get his dad from the airport?” Ellis asked.

I considered it for half a second. “As much as I don’t wanna leave him, I think I should pick him up. Good first impressions and all.”

Ellis grinned at me. “Meeting the father-in-law, huh? Are you nervous?”

God yes.

“No.”

He snorted. “If you’re gonna lie, you need to get better at it.”

I let out a puff of air. “Thanks.”

Mum stood up, signalling for Ellis to do the same. “You’ll be fine, Tully. He’ll love you. Come on, Ellis. We’re keeping him from getting anything done.”

“Do you need me to grab anything for dinner tonight?”

“Not a thing.” Mum ushered Ellis out the door. “Give Jeremiah our love. Oh, and Tully?”

“Yeah.”

“Before you pick up Jeremiah’s father, you might want to reconsider the shirt.”

Ellis clearly hadn’t paid my shirt any attention. He looked at it now and cracked up laughing, and Mum led him out the door.

I sighed at my now empty office. I hadn’t got a lot of work done but they did give me a lot to think about.

* * *

I knewJeremiah was in pain as soon as I walked in. He tried to sit up a little when he saw me, and he gasped and winced.

I took his hand. “What’s wrong?”

He shook his head. “Nothing. They just made me move a lot. On my side, and they had to push against my ribs. I’m fine.”

I brushed the hair off his forehead. “Can I get you anything?”

He pointed to his lips and pouted.

I laughed and kissed him. “Better?”

“Yes.”

I kissed his forehead for good measure. “So what did the docs say?”

“Full report to come, but prelim was good. Nothing worse, slight improvement, rhythm normal and blood flow good.”
