He grimaced, blushing a little. “Well, I asked Grace if she wanted to come over for dinner tonight.”

I grinned at him. “Oh, that sounds very... domestic. Will she be staying the whole night?”

His eyes narrowed at me. “Listen, nut sac—”

I laughed. “I’m just stirrin’ ya. That’s good news, Ellis. I’m glad you’re sorting things out with her.”

He studied me for a long beat. “Can you not bring any of that shit up in front of her? About how I was a dick to her before? Or try to embarrass me. Or her.” He clenched his teeth. “I swear to god, Tully, if you embarrass her—”

“I’ll be on my best behaviour.” I gave him a salute. “Promise.”

“I’ll make sure he’s well-behaved,” Jeremiah said.

Ellis sighed. “I’m going to grab a few things. Need anything for pizzas?”

“Garlic bread and real cheese would be great,” Jeremiah said as he walked toward the couch.

“Babe,” I started. “You need to watch your heart.”

“Garlic bread and real cheese would make my heart happy,” he mumbled. “And maybe it will give me energy for later.”

I stared at the back of his head.

Did he just...?

“Did you just imply...? Jeremiah!” In front of my brother.

Dear god.

Ellis snorted. “Pretty sure he did, yeah.”

Okay then. “Well,” I allowed. I nodded to Ellis. “Get him garlic bread and real cheese.”

He laughed as he walked to the door. “Oh, it’s supposed to storm tonight,” he called out before he left.

Hmm.

I jumped on the couch with Jeremiah, snuggling right in so we’d both fit, and I pulled the blanket over us. “Did you hear that? It’s supposed to storm tonight.”

His eyes stayed closed, he rubbed my back, and the corner of his mouth lifted ever so slightly. “Perfect night to stay indoors.”

“You, me, and pizza,” I said with a sigh. “And a storm outside. Sounds perfect to me too.”

He was quiet for a long beat. “I want to watch storms with you,” he murmured. “But I’m not ready to go out in them yet.”

I gave him a squeeze. “It’s okay, Jem.”

“I can have both, right?” he whispered.

Oh my god, yes. “You sure can have both.”

“What you said was true. And Doreen. She said the same thing. I can still go storm watching with you. But I’m done being reckless. Not with my heart, and not with yours.”

I sighed happily. “That’s all I ever wanted.”
