He lifted the lid and stared at the ring. He blinked quickly a few times before his eyes found mine. “Tully.”

“It was your mother’s wedding band,” I said. “Your dad thought you might like it. He said you had your mother’s hands, but if it doesn’t fit, we can get it resized. If you want.” He was stunned, clearly. He stared at me, then back at the ring, but he still hadn’t said anything. “Or not. It’s okay if you—”

A tear rolled down his cheek. “This is my mother’s?”

I nodded.

“Oh my god, Tully,” he said, a shaky hand over his mouth as more tears fell.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

He laughed through his tears and took the ring out of the box. Then he handed it to me and offered me his left hand.

“Is that a yes?” I asked.

“You technically haven’t asked me anything.”

I snorted. “Jeremiah, will you marry me? Say you’ll be with me forever. That we’ll come here forever, to this place. That we’ll chase storms forever. That we’ll love each other and protect each other forever.”

He nodded with more tears and a laugh, and I slipped the ring on his finger. It was a tight fit. “Oh, you might have trouble getting that off,” I said.

He shook his head. “I’m never taking it off.”

I stood up and pushed him back on the bed, following him so I could kiss him. His legs went around me, and I kissed him, our tongues in a familiar tangle, his hands in my hair.

As the storm raged on outside, as rain lashed the walls and thunder rumbled low and deep, he made love to me. Slow and deep, he slid in and out of me, taking me to that place only he could.

And when I was close, when my body was at the precipice, he froze. So far inside me, to the hilt, his eyes wide, and he licked his lips. “Lightning. Taste it with me.”

He crashed his mouth back to mine, giving me his tongue as the sky outside lit up with a symphony of thunder and lightning.

Just for us, the storm played on. Cymbals and drums, lights and song. Music only we could hear.

As it would for us, forever.

The end
