I snorted. “True.” I studied his hand over mine, and when he went to pull it away, I quickly threaded our fingers. “Thank you.”

He gave me a shy smile, then he took my hand and examined my knuckles, then my fingernails. He stood up and pulled me to my feet. “You need a shower. And I need to inspect you do a thorough job.”

I would have objected, but he stripped me naked and pushed me into the shower, sliding himself up against me, using his talented hands to scrub me clean, and his mouth... my god, the way he used his mouth...

I returned the favour, eagerly going to my knees for him like he had for me.

And afterwards, he took a nap on the bed while I downloaded all the data from the day before. Though I kept looking over at Tully. He looked so peaceful, so comfortable, I wanted nothing more than to forget work for a moment and join him.

So I did.

I lay down beside him and he immediately rolled over and threw his arm and leg over me. I smiled into his chest. He pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. I closed my eyes, smiling, probably happier in that moment than I’d ever been.

And we slept.

* * *

“Shit,”Tully said. “Wake up, wake up.”

I sat up, dazed and confused. I’d been so sound asleep, it took me a second to even remember where I was.

Then I noticed the radar beeping and the wind outside.

Shit.

Storm, incoming.

“Help me get the side down,” he said, running to the far end of the shed. “It’s coming in from the east. It’s gonna be a good one.”

I raced to my end of the shed and we got the wall down, the wind fighting us the whole way. Once it was locked down, we lowered the other side halfway, then ducked under it to take a look at the sky.

Dark, foreboding, and as Tully said, coming in from the wrong direction. The trees were whipped around in a fury, and thunder began to roll.

He clapped my back. “Let’s get your gear set up.”

I followed him, both of us racing back inside. He took the auto-station, and without me asking him to, he raced it to the far end of the clearing to set it up. I gave him a thumbs up when I got the first readings, and he raced back, quickly checking the camera screens as soon as he came in, while I opened the radars.

“How does it look?” he asked.

“It’s a wide front,” I replied. “About ten kilometres from our location but heading straight toward us. It’s moving pretty fast.” I pointed to the band of clouds with multiple white dots. “High electrical activity and hail.”

“Excellent.”

“I know—”

It was only when I looked at his face that I could tell he was being sarcastic.

“Yeah okay,” I mumbled.

He walked back toward the door. “Help me throw the tarp over the Jeep.”

It was a heavy sheet of army green canvas, and it took both of us to secure it with the wind. By the time we got it done, the rain had started.

It was thin and needle-like in the wind, and I was glad when Tully pulled me inside and shut the door behind us. “Whoo,” he said on a breath. “It’s gonna be a good’n.”

He went to check the radar and the readouts, excited as I was, and it thrilled me that he loved this part as much as me.

The build-up, the anticipation before the storm hit. The way the air grew thick and dense, ripening the atmosphere for lightning.
