NADIA

Ihave a 4:30 meeting in the conference room. I dread going, because I know what it’s about, and I can’t bear to hear Liam ask me to help with training my replacement.

But when I submitted my resignation, I promised him two full weeks to wrap of loose ends. Considering how my last job went, I need to leave on a good note. It’s bittersweet and a little ironic that I’m leaving yet another job over a guy, but this time it’s for the right reasons. This is the right move.

Besides, I should just be grateful that Liam didn’t drag me down to the bar association and try to have my license revoked after everything that played out.

Anyway, Liam has been interviewing potential new hires all week. He hasn’t seemed too impressed with any of the candidates. But that’s Liam—sky-high standards. Only the best will do.

But we both know that the clock is running down on my time here. So I’m assuming that he’s bringing me in to let me know that he’s decided on a new chief in-house counsel for the company by now.

When I get to the conference room, it’s not at all what I’d been expecting. The room is more crowded than last time. I spot the Paragons head coach and the offensive coordinator there alongside the general manager and Liam. They’re all bickering and tossing Harry’s paperwork around the table.

What the hell?

“What did I miss?” I ask carefully as I take a seat.

“A lot, actually,” Liam comments. He doesn’t look thrilled about it. “It seems there’s been a change since you and I last spoke.”

I blink. My eyes flit back to Harry’s name on the contract in the middle of the table. “A change? Are you looking at making a trade with a different club now? Who is it? Miami? Seattle?”

My stomach is in a knot. I should have made peace with this by now. But I still can’t bear to see Harry be traded almost two thousand miles away.

I already looked up flights and times and worst case scenarios. But it doesn’t matter. By car, by bus, by plane. No matter the mode of transportation, L.A. is way too far for Harry to be able to travel back and forth and truly be here for his grandmother. His parents. His brothers.

“Actually, a trade is off the table. Coach Robinson intervened and fought hard for your Harry.”

I blink.

“Well, someone had to,” Coach Robinson glares at the GM, and I’m sensing I missed out on the fun parts of this conversation before I arrived. “Harry may be inconsistent at times, but he has more heart than anybody in a Paragons’s uniform. Plus, he’s getting better, stronger every week. And let’s face it, we owe that wild card win to him and his tenacity.”

My chest tightens. I can’t believe what I’m hearing.

I look back to Liam. “So, you’re not trading Harry?”

My boss shakes his head.

“Not today? Not next month?”

Liam smiles at me, a little warmer than usual. “We’re keeping him. The coaching staff has confirmed that our needs are greater on defense right now. You yourself had excellent points when this first came up. It’s the smartest move for our cap space. I can’t make any long term promises. Hell, no one’s safe forever. But we’re optimistic we can keep Harry on the roster and take the momentum we’re seeing right now into next season.”

“Have you told him this?” I can barely hear over this erratic pitter patter in my ears.

“We haven’t,” Liam confirms, his lips quirking upward.

“Can I…Can I do the honors?” After all the drama that’s unfolded, it’s crazy of me to even ask. But I can’t help myself. I’m so excited.

“Sure,” Liam shrugs like he doesn’t care either way.

“Thank you.” I don’t wait to be dismissed, packing up to take off. The meeting is dismissed and everyone is heading for the door.

But then Liam calls my name.

“Yes?” I glance his way.

His forehead furrows and he doesn’t look quite as self-assured as he usually does. “As for your position here…”

I stall, my eyes slowly searching his face. “What about it?” I ask carefully.
