“Taking advantage of her,” Archer mutters bitterly.

“You guys have got it all wrong.” I throw up my palms defensively. “I didn’t take advantage of Karli.”

“It sure as fuck looks like you did,” Ronan yells out.

“Our sister is more than just some rebound,” Darius spits out.

“I fully agree with that,” I promise them.

Ronan picks up where Darius left off. “What pisses me off is, we confided in you. You knew she was in a low place with all the crap going on in her life. And youstillturned around and did this. That’s fucking selfish, man.”

I’m sweating bullets. But at least I haven’t pissed my pants. A weaker man would have pissed his pants by now. “I know this looks bad—”

“Damn right it does,” Archer mumbles.

I push the discussion forward. “All I know is, I’ve never connected with anybody the way I connect with Karli.”

And I know she feels the same way about me. Although her stubborn ass refuses to admit it.

“I-I love your sister,” I say, my eyes sweeping around at all the guys.

…And you could hear a pin drop in the room.

“Did that fucker just say he loves Karli?” Nolan mutters, his eyes snapping left to right to connect with his brothers.

“I think he did,” Darius chimes in, looking bewildered.

“Bro, I wasnotexpecting him to say that.” Ronan’s expression drops and his fists fall limply by his side. “Does that mean we can’t kick his ass?”

“I think we should wait and see how this plays out,” Nolan tells his twin.

“So this thing between you and Karli is more than a hookup? More than a rebound?” Darius asks.

“It was always more than a rebound,” I confirm. “Karli means the world to me.”

“So you two are in a relationship?” Archer questions slowly.

Shit. “Not exactly. When I told her how I feel, she said she doesn’t see a future for us. That fucking crushed me, man, I won’t lie.” This is going terribly.

“Mason, you showed up here, fresh out of a relationship,” Nolan says logically. “How do you even know what you want?”

“You think you love her?” Archer is asking now. “Do you even know her?”

I look him in the face when I say, “No offense but I know her better than you guys do. I know that the tough girl thing is just an act. I know that she’s terrified of disappointing you all. That’s her biggest fear in the world. I know that she feels suffocated by the way you hover over her and never let her solve her own problems. She doesn’t feel heard. She doesn’t feel seen. That’s why she’s always pitching a fit and screaming above the noise. She just wants to be heard…So to answer your question, yes, I know her.”

The brothers watch me with new eyes.

“Fuck, he does know her,” Nolan mumbles to himself.

Archer scrubs a hand down his face. “This is wild…”

“My head is confused,” Ronan says, rubbing his skull and giving up on this conversation.

“I don’t even know what to say at this point.” Darius shakes his head. “There is nothing left to say.”

“We should just let Felix deal with this,” Nolan says.

“Yeah. Let Felix deal with this. It’s his mess in the first place.” Archer heads for the door.
