Until the car rolls to a stop and the engine cuts off, and I realize…it’s not my brothers at all.

“M-Mason…”

The way my heart starts triple-beating at the sight of him is insane. My brain tells me to run to him. But my feet won’t move. Because my soul is terrified this is just a mirage, some cruel prank by the universe.

But Mason slips from behind the wheel and his eyes connect with mine across the distance. My heart stops.

“Hi Karli…”

“Hi Mason…”

And that’s all it takes for my composure to fall apart.

Abandoning my overnight bag on the porch, I run toward him and his arms open up for me when I leap and wrap my legs around his back.

His lips claim mine. “Hi.”

I lock my arms around his neck. “Hi.”

Our lips press together again. “Hi.”

Just the smell of his skin and the feel of his chest pounding against mine is like coming home.

“What are you doing here?” I finally ask.

He buries his face in my neck and breathes me in. “I’m here for you.”

“I don’t understand.” My head tips back when his lips trail along my throat.

“God. I missed you so much,” he’s grumbling.

My fingers slide into his hair to guide his head backward so I can catch his gaze. “Mason, what are you saying?”

I stare into his eyes. Into those glimmering brown irises that I love so much. But I can see his genuineness in the way that he’s looking at me.

“I’m saying that I made the biggest mistake of my life when I walked away from you, Karli. I’m sorry. I’m so very sorry. I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking. And now, I just want to fix things. I’ll do whatever it takes to fix things.”

“I want to fix things, too,” I tell him. “My biggest regret is that I didn’t tell you I loved you the first night you said it to me. I love you, Mason. Hell, I’ve loved you since the very first night we met.”

“I feel the same way, baby. I’ve been in love with you this whole time. I just couldn’t see it at first because I was busy being a scared idiot.”

I laugh. “No judgment. I was pretty dumb, too. I’m sorry, Mason.”

“Meeting you in that dirty bar is the best thing that ever happened to me, Karli Brighton.”

I laugh some more, giddy. “I…I…I can’t find the words I’m looking for.” I try to wiggle out of his hold. “Wait—let me down.”

Mason sets me down but I swear my feet aren’t touching the ground. I’m practically levitating across the yard, back up the front steps to grab my speech.

“Where are you going?” I hear Mason call after me, panic in his voice. “Why is your bag packed?”

“Well, I was on my way to come find you,” I say. “At least, that was the plan until you showed up here.”

He follows me right up the porch, turning me around and cupping my cheeks in his hands. “I’m right here, baby. I’m right here. I won’t ever leave you searching for me again.”

We kiss some more, until I’m absolutely breathless.

“Wait. Wait. Wait,” I say pulling away. I crouch down, digging through my bag and searching for my script.
