An ironic laugh bursts past her lips, the warmth of her breath gently fluttering against my chin. “Oh yeah? I bet you’d really like that, wouldn’t you?”

“You know I would.” I crowd her against the counter as I momentarily lean in to speak into her ear. “And if I remember correctly, you liked it, too.”

Karli shivers, her eyes shuttering closed.

I don’t know what’s gotten into me, but at this point, I can’t stop myself. I don’t want to.

When she doesn’t argue, I keep going, still keeping my voice low. “I think about it every time I drive by that motel outside of town. I think about the sounds you made. The expressions on your face. And how even after you left, the sheets smelled like you. Don’t you think about that night, too?”

Karli whimpers, the needy sound shooting to my groin.

My fingers toy with the hem of her skirt as her body sways forward, pressing against mine. God, she smells nice. And she’s soft, too.

“What if I told you, you’re the woman I want, Karli? Not someone else. You.”

She’s now breathing heavy and licking her lips, undoubtedly turned on. But she’s shaking her head, desperately trying to hold back. “Mason…” She reaches up, clenching the front of my T-shirt. Subtly dragging me closer even though she clearly knows it’s wrong.

I trace my fingertip across the seam of her mouth. “Don’t you remember how good we made each other feel? Don’t you want to do it again.”

Her breaths are coming out in little staccato bursts now. Her nipples are pointed and prominent beneath the fabric of her shirt. When she presses them against me, my cock jerks furiously in my boxers.

My fingertip traces the column of her neck as I push all my morals aside and make a confession. “I want you so fucking bad, Karli. All you have to do is say the word.”

“Please, Mason. We…can’t. We promised…” she mutters, and even though her words don’t hold much conviction, her palm flattens against my chest. She gives me the slightest, little push.

I blink. I examine her eyes. The expression I see there is a cold dash of water to the face.

I take a hurried step backward. “Sorry, Karli. Sorry. I just got carried away.”

Damn—I need to get out of this kitchen. Before I fuck up in a way I can’t possibly apologize for.

I continue backing away until there’s more than enough space between us. I drag my hands through my hair. “I…I’m sorry.”

I meant every damn word I just said to her. I want her. Bad. But I won’t go against a woman’s will. Even if she doesn’t mean it.

The look she gives me scorches with need and regret and longing. “I am, too.”

KARLI

I’m humming to myself in the clinic break room as I grab a twisted fork from the cutlery drawer. It was a long morning here at the clinic and I’msoready to enjoy my lunch and catch up on my reading. That is, until my brother and Mason stroll in, talking uproariously and breaking my solitude.

My heart jolts, hurtling itself against my ribcage at the sight of my sinful roommate.

I don’t know what the hell happened between us in the kitchen this morning. The way he pinned me against the counter and talked all that smack into my ear. The way I let him. Oh my god.

All I know is he melted my panties right there on the spot. I had to make a detour back to my bedroom for a clean pair of underwear before I could leave the house.

And when all was said and done, he just shrugged it all off. He just sauntered into work, chatting and laughing with all his patients, acting like nothing happened. Meanwhile, I’ve been physically unable to make eye contact with the man all morning.

Mason’s footsteps falter, and he hesitates in the doorway when he spots me already seated at the small round table now. His throat bobs. Then he makes a beeline for the freezer, whipping out a frozen pizza roll, and tossing it into the microwave.

Felix drops down on one side of me, while Mason stares intently at the microwave’s spinning turntable.

“Where’d you get that?” I ask my brother, watching him uncover a container of piping hot lasagna.

“Some girl,” Felix answers with a shrug, grinning eagerly down at his lunch.
