My attention skates further south, doing a careful assessment of the bruises I left on her bare thighs. She juts out a hip, folding her arms across her chest and hissing at me like a feral animal. “Are you kidding me, Pretty Boy? Not the best time to be taking an eyeful—”

“Don’t flatter yourself, Tough Girl. I was not taking an eyeful—”

We’re so busy barking at each other that neither of us hears the front door opening.

Her insults stop mid-sentence. Her eyeballs suddenly bulge as her gaze shoots past my shoulder.

“Mason Westbrook! My man!” A large hand clamps down on my shoulder.

I freeze.

When I glance back, I find one of my best buddies in the world cluelessly grinning at me.

“Felix…Hey…Hi…” I start, but he steps past me, his narrowed gaze pinned on his sister.

“Karli? What the hell are you doing here?”

Karli. Right, Karli.

Shoulders climbing up to her ears, she grins sheepishly. “Um, surprise!”

Felix frowns as he gives her a quick once-over. “And why aren’t you wearing any pants? And why’s there broken glass on the floor? And a blow-up doll? And why…?”

Karli blinks, bashfully crossing one knee over the other. “Oh, uh...funny story…” she mutters.

“Notthatfunny,” I mutter back.

Felix’s head swings my way.

My hands shoot up in surrender. “I didn’t take them off!”

He squints at me. “Huh?”

I want to smack myself. I’m a shitty liar and apparently don’t know how to handle my guilty conscience. “I-I mean…I just walked in a minute ago. Your sister was already here. With no pants on.”

The scary woman snarls at me.

Well played, Mason.

As I’m kicking myself in the teeth, Karli is explaining how her plans have changed and that she’s officially home for the summer.

Felix shakes his head as he steps around the blow-up doll and strolls over to the pantry, grabbing a broom. “I’m confused. I thought you were taking summer classes to get a head start on your credits or whatever you said you were going to do.” He sweeps up the broken mug.

Karli bites down on her lip, suddenly looking embarrassed. Her eyes dart to me before darting away just as quickly. Whatever is going on with her, I get the sense that she doesn’t exactly want to share her personal business with her one night stand. Go figure.

Suddenly she stands taller, pushing her shoulders back. “Look, I have every right to be here,” she tells her brother. “I grew up here, too.”

I get distracted from the conversation, my eyes wandering back to the sex bruises on her body. Shit.

Felix releases an impatient sigh, then his gaze travels my way.

I quickly tear my eyes away from Karli’s legs, my chest slamming like a car door. I don’t think Felix caught me gawking at his little sister, but that was a close fucking call.

“Sorry about all this, Mason,” my friend says out the side of his mouth. Then he turns back to Karli. “Of course. I know you grew up here, too. Don’t bite my head off,” he replies, giving his sister’s shoulder a playful shake.

“Fine,” she breathes out. “But the question is; who is this guy you’ve apparently moved into our parents’ house?” One of Karli’s dark brows lifts in my direction.

Felix sighs, speaking to his sister. “Do you really want to have this conversation when you’re standing here half-naked?”
