“So Mikey and Ronan trained you to fight?” Declan asks. I nod against his chest, waiting for the rest of his question. “Who trained you on everything else?”

Whoop there it is.

“Joe trained me on weapons and in the art of killing.” Joe looks at me and I can see the affectionate gleam in his eye at the way I phrased it.

“Really?” Holden’s shock isn’t surprising. Joe is normally the one who reins me in while everyone else encourages my bloodthirsty side.

Joe sighs as he wipes his hands down his legs. “She had already had her first kill. I merely taught her some survival skills. Never expected her to have such a taste for it,” he ends in a grumble.

“When did this become the make fun of Scar circle of hell?”

Luca looks up from his phone. “You all have the attention span of toddlers.”

“Is this why you guys take care of all the cleanup?” Declan asks Mikey and Ronan.

Mikey is the one to answer, “Yeah, we’ve been in this business a lot longer than Scar and Luca. We’ve pretty much merged at this point, that we almost exclusively work for them, but we occasionally do work for allies and old friends.” I’m surprised by how talkative he’s been tonight. He’s normally the more silent of the two, leaving Ronan to answer most questions.

“Interesting,” Declan responds. I can tell he’s thinking about something, putting pieces together for some puzzle he still had in his head. He does it often now. Takes in new information as it comes and jumps to conclusions based on past observations.

“Scar keeps us busy enough without the extra clients,” Ronan jumps in. I flip him off. All of them are a bunch of fuckers.

“Toddlers,” Luca mutters. I’d flip him off too, but he’d probably enjoy it.

“Right, what else do we need to go over?”

“Jade is safe with Ian as her bodyguard, new security will be in place for everyone by the end of the week. The kids and Jade will get the updates first. The burned aliases are dead and buried, the properties sold off and cleaned out. No updates on Romano, but we know Ciar is in town.” Noah ticks off a finger with each item we’ve gone over.

“Rachel is Jade’s sister,” Kade adds.

“We haven’t proven that,” I say through gritted teeth.

“All but,” he argues back.

“There’s still no reason to bring her in on this. We are already providing her protection and working with her when it comes to Romano, why do I need to give her an update on Jade?”

Declan and Luca sigh almost simultaneously. “You guys already had this fight,” Ryder interjects. “Let’s leave it until Jade comes to you, Scar.” I start to argue but he gives me this look that shuts me down. I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but something about it makes me feel like parents fighting in front of their kid.

I narrow my eyes at Ry. That’s weird. “Don’t do that,” I snap at him, not that he takes offense or stops.

“The cleanup today was also taken care of,” Mikey says, drawing the attention back to business.

“Perfect. Now, travel for the rest of us,” I pause, waiting until I have everyone’s full attention. “We are going to be utilizing the tunnels to travel almost exclusively. No one will be driving to Ian or the kid’s places. We will be driving to several close entrances and using those to go see them. Mikey, Ronan, can you guys take care of the cars like we’ve planned for in our contingency plans?”

“You got it, boss,” they say simultaneously.

“That means Jade and Britt are going to need to start familiarizing themselves with them.”

“Shit,” Ronan curses. “That’s going to be fun for exactly no one.”

“I’ll leave it to you,” I wink.

We wrap up the rest of the plan for tonight and agree on when to meet for training. Holden and Tyler are the first to head out, followed closely by Mikey and Ronan. Joe stays a little later to get us all caught up on the kids. I saw Roe just this morning, but it already feels like it’s been forever.

We have a lot of additional security stationed around the kids, so there’s a bit more to go over with Joe. Our vetting process was thorough with the men and women we hired, a lot already having a history with us. But every day we find more employees with ties to Romano. We can’t afford to slack on our vigilance now. Not when it comes to the kids.

They won’t be the ones to pay for their parents’ sins. Not while I’m still alive.

Only Scar would thinkthat giving the answers to an almost decade long mystery could be considered an ice breaker.
