Kade drives and while I’m tempted to pull Scar into the backseat with me, I can tell she’s getting serious. The time for quick orgasms and teasing each other has passed. The air is taut with the tension that comes with every run.
A mask slips over both Kade’s and Scar’s faces. I can almost feel the same one taking over my own as well. Concealing parts of ourselves, locking down our emotions, letting out our inner monsters.
“While the others are dealing with the spies throughout our organizations, I thought we would hit Romano a little bit harder.” Her tone is even and cool, but she can’t hide the way her lips twitch at whatever is running through her head.
Kade watches her out of the corner of his eye. “Who are we going after then?”
I cock my head as I watch the two of them. I’ll never tire of seeing the dynamic between these two. Especially in these situations.
“Some of his lesser known associates. The ones he attempts to keep under wraps.”
I nod along with her words, liking what she’s saying, but I can see Kade’s unease from here. His hands tighten on the steering wheel and he chances a glance at her.
“You want to go after other big names? Tonight? With as little preparation as we have?” Well, when he puts it like that, he does have a point.
Scar just shrugs though. My head volleys back and forth between the two of them. “Everyone is going after people with little prep tonight.”
Kade curses under his breath. “You know damn well there is a difference between low level informants Romano has planted and going after other people in this world.”
My eyes dart back to her as I pull my phone out. “Yeah well, we also have more information on the people I’m planning to take out tonight.”
Of course she’s prepared. Scar doesn’t take that for granted. She isn’t as reckless as she used to be. Even back then I heard she was meticulous in her plans, just a little loose with her own mortality.
I look down at my phone to text Noah.
Ryder:Mom and Dad are fighting again.
Kade scoffs as he comes to the same realization that I have. “These are people on your list from when you were gone, aren’t they?”
“Of course they are,” she snaps.
Noah:Dammit. I knew I should have gone with you guys.
Ryder:Kind of wish I had popcorn right now.
“You should know by now that I don't make any rash decisions. I promised to stop putting myself at risk, but even if that was a concern, you should know I would never put you and Ryder in danger needlessly.”
Aww, she does care. I struggle to hold back the smirk as I watch Kade fight his inner debate. It’s clear he feels guilty for doubting her, but her safety is never going to be something he backs down from either.
Noah:You know they’re only getting each other worked up.
Ryder:Fuck, me too dude. It’s kinda hot watching Scar put him in his place.
I probably have more blind trust in Scar than anyone else does. Maybe it’s because I’m the newest to this world and in the thick of things, but Scar has never done us wrong. She’s not perfect, but when it comes to these runs she comes as close as humanly possible.
Ryder:All commanding. Take no shit attitude.
Noah:You’re the worst.
I grin down at his response, knowing he would trade places with me in a heartbeat. It’s always fun watching Scar fight with Luca and Kade. I can’t really describe why, except that it feels a lot like foreplay.
Kade huffs and I already know he isn’t going to apologize. She won’t either. They’re both too stubborn for their own good.
“Okay fine,” he agrees. It’s the most she will get out of him, luckily it’s all she needs. “So where are we going, Ladybug?”
I don’t even try to suppress the laugh on that one. It’s his way of trying to soften her up. I shake my head as I watch it work on her. I guess when you are as stubborn as the two of them are you need to have ways of apologizing without actually saying the words.
“We have four names on our list tonight. They’re outliers in our world. Men who never would have been on our radar. First on the list is Jason Ruiz, his forger. The man helps create all of his aliases. He doesn’t work for anyone else that we know. He exclusively provides his services to Romano. I think there’s a loose relation there. Doesn’t really matter though. This is the guy he comes to when he can’t trust anyone. It’ll be a huge loss for him to lose him.”
