Prologue

Valentina

I could not believe my eyes. Here I was, standing next to Leon Pierce, the sexiest guy on earth, the father of my child, and, as it turns out, a world-famous billionaire!

Vivian, my sister, proceeded to introduce us, and all this time, I was thinking of what Leon would do if he found out our one-night stand 3 years ago resulted in a beautiful little girl.

“Valentina, this is Leon Pierce. The CTO and an Oil Tycoon of Pierce Oil. Leon, my twin sister.” Vivian introduced us.

“Valentina.” He said as if tasting my name. His deep, baritone voice filled my ears and brought sweet memories back.

“Leon.” I managed to get out in almost a whisper.

Vivian looked over at Leon and me, and her face lit up at the interaction between us, “You both know each other?” she asked. I remained quiet, looking at him. He stared at me, too. We were both surprised to see each other. How was he here? Of all the people I ever imagined I would run into, Leon was the last on my list, especially not in Chicago of all places. My mind went to Ava, my three-year-old who was at home with her babysitter. I started to worry that Leon would ask me what I’d been up to.

“Yeah, I know her,” Leon responded.

“I met him a couple years ago in New York,” I said, glancing at him before looking away. Antonio, another tech CEO standing in the formed little circle, also looked surprised.

“Did you guys work together?” He asked.

Leon shook his head, “It was a somewhat social setting.” He responded. I could still feel his eyes on me, and I struggled not to look at him. He smelt amazing and looked far more handsome than I remembered, but I could not risk looking at him too long to avoid getting questioning looks from people.

Chapter1

Valentina

THREE YEARS AGO

“This is the last box from the kitchen,” I said as I threw myself into the couch. Vivian and I were packing the last of our things to move out of New York. This city has been home to us throughout our college years, and a year after college, we were saying goodbye to it.

The weeks leading up to the decision to leave New York were difficult for us. We were out of school and out of jobs. Vivian had been applying for tech roles all over the country, and we were hoping to hear from any one of them.

My art career had taken a turn for the worse. I was let go from the previous gallery I worked at because they wanted to work only with students. The minute I graduated, they didn’t need me anymore. It was weird and hard to wrap my head around, but I accepted my fate and started looking for other jobs too.

Vivian and I ran through our savings, paying rent and keeping up with our daily living. It was becoming hard to stay afloat. The evening Vivian got the email informing her that she had been accepted for the role of a Frontend developer for Micatech, we were both sitting on the floor of our apartment, eating what was left of a box of pizza we had bought the day before.

She screamed and I jumped up beside her. “What’s wrong Viv?” I asked, nervous.

Her eyes ran through the email and she screamed again, scaring me. “Vivian! What’s that?”

“I got the job.”

“You did?”

“Yes!! I got the job at Micatech!” she screamed and we both shrieked in excitement. I hugged her tightly and we somehow ended up crying. We had really been through so much recently.

“I’m so happy for you,” I said, hugging her tightly. She suddenly frowned and sat back down.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“It requires me to relocate and work in Chicago,” she said.

“Don’t you want to go?” I asked.

“I do but what about you? Are you going to be here all alone?” she asked.

“I don’t mind. Viv, listen to me. I’ll be fine. Take this opportunity. We have been praying for this.”
