“Hey, what are you up to tonight?”

“I have a date,” I said, putting on my underwear.

“A date? With whom? Valentina? I see the way you look at her.”

“No, it’s this other girl Paula set me up with.”

“I thought Paula was done with this matchmaking thing.”

“Apparently, she isn’t. She might have even cost me a chance with Valentina.”

“How?” he asked, and I narrated how I ran into Valentina at the coffee shop, and Paula ran into us and brought up the date. Miguel busted out in laughter.

“Why didn’t you distract Paula? Or even give her a sign that Valentina was a woman you had your eyes on.”

“I honestly don’t know why I didn’t do anything. Please send me Valentina’s number. I need to apologize to her.”

“What will you say?” he asked.

I sighed, “I don’t know man, just send the number to me. I’ll figure out what to say.”

“It’s no problem. Who knows, you might end up liking this girl Paula is setting you up with.”

I scoffed. “I’m 85 percent sure I will not.”

“That’s so negative. Why do you think so?”

“Paula has terrible taste in women. This is not the first time she’s tried to hook me up with one of her friends.”

“You have a point but this one could be different, keep an open mind.”

I chuckled, “Let’s see.”

“If you’re feeling this negative about this, why did you agree to go out with her?”

“You know Paula. She is making me do this.”

“Alright. I was thinking we could go to the club tonight but since you have a date, I’ll go with someone else.”

“Get off my phone man and don’t forget to send me Valentina’s number,” I said, ending the call. I was already done putting on my clothes. I put on my shoes and looked at the time. If I didn’t leave now, I was going to be late. Ramon was already waiting downstairs by the time I got there, I sent him the address and we were on our way.

Immediately I walked into the restaurant, my eyes landed on a face that looked like the one in the picture Paula sent to me. She had jet black hair and her makeup was very shiny and bold. I unconsciously compared it to how Valentina does her makeup, it was very different. Valentina’s makeup was always soft and nothing as heavy as this. I decided that I didn’t like it.

“Hello, I’m Leon,” I said. She looked at me as I lowered myself into the chair opposite hers on the table.

“I’m Karen. Nice to meet you,” she said, stretching out her hand for a handshake. I took it and shook her lightly. “Your pictures don’t do you any justice. You’re far more handsome in person.” She complimented.

“Thank you, you are beautiful yourself,” I responded, trying to focus my attention on her. Her nails were long and painted bright red. I couldn’t deny the fact that she looked beautiful in her black dress that exposed her cleavage.

“What do you do for work?” I asked, trying to make conversation.

“I am a celebrity stylist,” she responded, sounding proud of herself.

‘Oh, that’s interesting. That’s why you’ve been out of town.”

“Yes, it is. I’ve been working a lot.” She said. Just then, a waiter arrived with a bottle of wine and poured us both glasses, before taking our orders and leaving.

“I hope you don’t mind. I ordered a bottle of wine before you arrived.”
