“Why are you driving yourself today?”

“I wanted it to be just the two of us tonight.”

“What happens to my car?”

“We could come back here and pick it up or I’ll have someone drive it home for you. The choice is yours.”

I know I was supposed to respond to him but I was too focused on figuring out how he started the car. I didn’t see any keys or buttons. He must have noticed me looking at him, a proud smile spread across his lips while he turned the steering.

“Where are we going?” I asked, very curious.

“You’ll see.” He simply responded and remained quiet. Leon wasn’t usually this quiet. Either he was trying to impress me so badly or he was planning something weird. I decided to remain quiet and see where this goes.

I saw him drive to the street of a popular marina in town. “Where are we going Leon? I don’t like swimming.”

He let out a loud, hearty laughter. “I would not swim at a Marina.”

He parked the car and there were suddenly two men dressed in black suits standing by the car. One of them opened the door for me and I alighted. I looked around and felt the cool breeze on my skin and in my hair. Leon came to stand beside me and then we started heading towards the water.

We climbed onto the walkway made of wood and then a large yacht came into view. The name Pierce was written in cursive writing with black paint spread across the white body of the yacht. My jaw dropped.

“Your family has a yacht?” I asked in surprise.

“Why do you sound very surprised?” he asked.

“I don’t even know. I knew you were wealthy but… Wow.”

“And it’s my yacht, not family owned.” He said and held out his palm. I looked at it and slid mine into his. We started walking towards the yacht. Gently, we climbed onto it and that was when the already set dinner table came into view. I couldn’t help the smile that escaped my lips.

“Please, sit.” He said, as one of the men in black suit that had been following us moved a chair at the table back for me. I walked over to the table and lowered myself into it, mouthing a thank you to the man. Leon sat opposite me and just then, a short, pot-bellied man dressed in chef uniform approached us.

His thick French accent was heard immediately when he started speaking, “Good evening, I’m Chef Pierre and I’ll be at your service this evening. The entrée is Cheese Gougeres with Ham and Rosemary.” He said as there were other servers that brought the food to the table together with bottles and glasses of wine.

Another lady took her time to explain our options on wine and Leon looked to me, “Which would you prefer?”

I shook my head shyly, “I… I don’t know the first thing about wine. Please choose one.”

He smiled and picked a bottle of champagne named Dom Perignon and it was opened for us. I tasted the entrée which looked like a puff pastry and smiled in pleasure. It was cheesy and super airy in the middle and it tasted delicious.

“You like?” Leon asked. I nodded, still smiling. “Taste the wine and tell me what you think.”

I lifted the glass to my lips. It tasted fruity, but I couldn’t quite tell what fruits I was tasting. “It’s very nice.”

“Nice? Is that all you can say about the Dom Perignon?” Leon asked and I let out a light laugh.

“I taste fruits, I just don’t know which ones. It does taste great if I’m being honest.”

He nodded, “Fair enough.”

I took another bite of the cheese gougeres and chewed slowly. Leon was staring intensely the whole time I chewed.

“What?”

“How do you do it?”

“Do what?” I asked, reaching for my glass of wine.

“Look so effortlessly beautiful. It’s really mind boggling. All you’re doing is sitting there, chewing on some pastry and I’m marveling at your beauty.”
