“Fine. Text me with the details and requirements.” She said, “And Leon,”

“Yes?”

“Don’t think that I’ll let you get custody of Ava. If this DNA stunt is a first step in a custody battle, then get prepared. I will not let you take my daughter away from me,” she ended the call immediately after.

Chapter20

Valentina

The urge to throw something consumed me when I got off the phone with Leon. Asking for a test to prove I didn’t lie to him was not something I was expecting from him, being the stereotypical wealthy man, he was making sure I wasn’t trying to mooch some money off him.

I stood up and started pacing my office. What the hell was he insinuating? That I’d lie to him about my child. Did he think I was that dishonest? James knocked and put his neck into my office. He always had the worst timing.

“What James?” I asked, almost shouting.

“Woah! I’m sorry. I just wanted to confirm you got my email and tell you that I was closing.”

“I will check for the email and you can go home,” I said, waving him off with my hand.

My phone started ringing and I ran to it. I didn’t know who I was expecting but it was a number I didn’t have saved.

“Hello,” I said into the speaker. The other end of the line remained quiet.

“Is this Leon? Who is this?”

I still got no response and the call ended, just as I was about to ask who was there again. I threw the phone down on my table and started packing my bag to close. I got into my car and tried to calm down. I didn’t want to drive in that annoyed state.

When I got home, Mike was just leaving. I went in and found Vivian and Ava sitting on the floor, eating ice cream.

“I’m sorry, I know we said we’d reduce her sugar, but Mikey (as she fondly called her boyfriend) got me some and I couldn’t say no to her cute face,” Vivian said with a smile. Her smiles were always infectious.

“It’s fine, but I think she’s had enough,” I said, carrying Ava up and tickling her until she started laughing. I took her to sit on my lap on the couch and fixed her hair.

“Leon is asking for a DNA test,” I said to Vivian and she got up from the floor and came towards me.

“What?”

“He said it’s the only way he can accept what I told him.”

“That’s crazy.”

“I have accepted it. Besides, I have nothing to hide. She is his child.”

“Leon is an asshole,” Vivian said and I slapped her thighs.

‘Language, Viv.”

She slapped her hands across her mouth, “I’m sorry.”

Ava didn’t seem to notice the exchange between us, her eyes were glued to the cartoon on TV.

Later that evening, Leon texted me the details of the hospital and the time. He also told me to come along with Ava’s toothbrush or hairbrush. I resolved to take both of them.

The next day at noon, I arrived at the hospital at the address he sent to me. He was already sitting in the doctor’s office when I got there.

“You’re late.” He said. I ignored him and exchanged pleasantries with the doctor. The doctor explained that they’d take a sample of both our saliva and test it against Ava’s own. He told us that the test would be sped up as it is a special request.

He swabbed both our cheeks and went away with the bag containing Ava’s toothbrush.
