The sound from the phone became clearer and I heard her afraid voice respond, “I don’t know where I am but I’m sharing my location right now.” A map coordinate came into my phone in seconds, which I transmitted to the police tech team, who tracked her and dispatched a squad to rescue her.

I hoped she was fine, her voice sounded shaky like she was afraid. The police officers at my house put me in the car and headed to the location. It was a small living settlement on the outskirts of Chicago. Far away from any activities. A few houses were scattered here and there but were not close together.

We got to the house and a tall man was in handcuffs and being led to the car. Valentina and Ava were being led out, covered in blankets and I ran towards them and hugged them both tightly. Ava’s eyes were red and she had a runny nose, which I wiped with my hands.

“You’re fine baby. You’re fine.” I said. The police told me they would take them to the hospital and I was free to ride with them in the ambulance. Valentina had not said a word and she held onto Ava tightly. I couldn’t imagine what she went through in the hands of that animal.

“Are you okay?” I asked her and she nodded.

“I’m fine. I just need a doctor to check if Ava is doing alright.”

We got to the hospital and they were both examined by the doctors. Valentina had a small scratch on her back and a gash on the back of her head, aside from that she was fine. Ava, on the other hand, was doing okay. They were given a few drugs and were free to go home.

An uncomfortable feeling settled in my chest when I saw Valentina with a gash on her head. I pushed the anger down, and I realized that I had failed to protect the ones I love. How did I ever let this happen to them?

I took them to my house and filled the entire building with more security than the White House. The chef had a meal prepared for them and they ate slowly. Vivian refused to leave their side the entire night. I wanted to know all that happened but I also needed them to get rest and be okay.

I was leading them to my room when Valentina asked, “Can we just have a separate room tonight?”

I took them to the room next door to mine. It was clean but Giselle quickly changed the sheets. Vivian went in with Ava while I spoke to Valentina.

“There are security men right outside the door here for you to feel safe and if you need me, I’d be right next door,” I said before she retired for the night.

The next morning, I got on a conference call with my brothers.

“How was she found?” Logan asked.

“I was just done with dinner when I got the call. She sent me her live location which I shared with the police. I’ve not been able to get any more information from her. She is still shaken up.”

“What about Ava? How is she?” Lucian asked this time.

“She is fine. It doesn’t seem like she is as affected as Valentina.”

“When this kind of thing happened to Adara, she went to therapy. I recommend it to Valentina. She has been through so much recently.” Logan said and Lucian agreed with him.

“Don’t pressure her into speaking about it. Let her take her time.” Lucian added. “Brooklyn and I will come over later to see her, even though this was not how we intended to meet.”

“It’s fine. I have to go check up on them.”

“Alright, please, you all stay safe,” Logan said before he ended the call. I got up and went to their door. After knocking twice, the door opened. Ava ran to me. She seemed excited. I was grateful for the gift of innocence children had. She was not as affected as her mom as she probably didn’t fully understand the situation.

Vivian was sitting on the armchair beside the bed with a smile. Everyone looked bright, including Valentina. She was on the bed, smiling at Ava.

“We need some change of clothes,” Valentina said to me and Vivian got up.

“I’ll rush home and get you all you need.” said Vivian.

“I’ll have security go with you; we can never be too sure,” I said and she smiled.

“I’ll go with Ramon and one other person.” She said and I nodded.

“Where is Kyle?” Valentina asked while Vivian left the room.

“I fired him.”

“My goodness, you shouldn’t have.”

“He was careless with you and Ava. Twice.”
