“Yeah. I also like your reactions to food, all the time. It makes me wish I was the food you’re eating. The way you take your time to enjoy every morsel of food, it’s really hot.”

He chuckled. “Thank you, I guess.”

“You guess? You didn’t mean it then.”

He laughed. “I’m sorry. I did mean it. Thank you.”

We ordered and when asked for our choice of drinks, I ordered a lemonade. Leon ordered a bottle of non-alcoholic beer with his meal.

While waiting, he reached across the table and took my hand. “I want to discuss something important with you.”

My heart skipped a beat. What was he going to say? “I’m listening.”

“Things between us, they… they progressed quite quickly and…”

The waiter interrupted us and served the food. My heart started racing as the waiter kept the plates on the table. Was Leon going to end things with me? Didn’t he like me any more now that I was in therapy? Did he see me as damaged?

The waiter finished serving the meals and left. We were once again left alone. I was half expecting Leon to reach for my hand again but he didn’t. He just stared at the meal.

“You were saying something,” I said nervously.

“Oh yes, don’t mind me. I was looking at the food, trying to make sure they didn’t make a mistake with the order. Uhmm…”

He was visibly uneasy. What could be so difficult for him to tell me?

“Leon, you’re scaring me. What’s going on?”

“Nothing, nothing serious. I was saying that things between us sort of progressed quickly and we didn’t have enough time to talk and revisit some topics.”

“Okay, like what?”

“The topic of us. I know that we are something, I just want us to put a name to it. I don’t deal very well with uncertainties.”

I sighed in relief and took a sip from my drink.

“What had you so worried?” he asked, genuinely confused.

“For a second, I thought you were going to end things between us.”

“What? Why would you think that Valentina?”

“I… I have observed that you’re a bit quiet around me these days. It had me worried, maybe you started to see me as something that was broken.”

He immediately reached for my hand and held it tightly. “I would never think that. You are not broken. I was a bit worried but for a different reason.”

“Which is?”

“I was worried that bringing this topic up would scare you away from me or something. I don’t know.”

I squeezed his hand, which was intertwined with mine. “I don’t think I can be scared of being in a relationship with you.”

“Is that what we are? In a relationship?” he asked with a hopeful look.

I shrugged, “If that’s what you want.”

“I’d want that more than anything.”

“I’ll be your girlfriend,” I said and a sudden shyness engulfed me. My eyes no longer met his, so I stared at the table.
