“I wasn’t.” She shakes her head vehemently. “Maybe you misheard.”

After our morning fuck, she fell asleep again. I wanted to stay in her warmth, but I’m meeting with my capos and soldiers to make the official announcement that the Giannis are now under my control.

Then I had a call with Justin. He was finally able to break through the firewall of Jackson Shaw’s home security. But there was a problem. The footage had been tampered with and all he could get were fuzzy images that he was still trying to clean up.

Even with all that, I couldn’t bring myself to ask her to go.

I left her on the bed and went into my large walk-in shower. Five minutes in, I heard the scream. It was the type of blood-curdling scream I’ve grown accustomed to hearing, one full of loss and sorrow and terror.

With suds in my hair, I flew out of the bathroom, nearly slipping on the tile floor. Emily was mumbling, writhing, the sheets fisted in her hands. She screamed again, her face contorting in agony and, for a moment, I wondered if she was being gutted in her dream.

I didn’t just want to wake her. I wanted to go in there and destroy whatever was doing this to her.

But she says she wasn’t dreaming. The truth of what she believes is there in her blue gaze.

“Noah?” She reaches for me and touches my shoulder. “I’m so sorry if I scared you.” There’s genuine concern in her expression. Concern for me.

“Emily, you were dreaming. I think it was a nightmare.”

She shrugs as if it’s not a big deal. “I don’t remember.”

“Do you remember any of the dreams you had last night?”

Shaking her head, she says, “I don’t usually.”

I wipe my palm over my face and let out a long breath, willing my pulse to steady. “I’m going to finish my shower. You’re coming with me.”

“To shower?”

“Yes. I have a business meeting today and I don’t want you out of my sight right now.”

Sighing, she sits up. “I have to work too.” She wraps her arms around my wet shoulders and grazes my lips with hers. “Would it help if I took a cab home?”

“I want to keep you with me as long as possible,” I say. “I’ll take you home.”

And with any luck, Jackson will be there to see me drop her off.

“I’ll pick you up at nine,” I tell Emily before she exits my car.

“Where are we going?”

“You plan it. I want you to show me Jersey according to Emily. Every place that matters to you, I want to see it.”

She beams. “Okay. I’d love that.”

The front door to the house opens and she peers over her shoulder. Jackson is standing there, his arms crossed over his massive chest, staring our way.

“I’ll see you tonight.” She blows me a kiss and does the walk of shame in that insanely sexy red dress past her glowering father.

Narrowing my gaze on him, I wonder what kind of man he truly is. Who he is. A protective father. Savvy businessman. Criminal. A murderer?

Yes. A man like him could easily slip into the role of a killer, given the right motive. The question is, did he have a motive to kill my father?

It won’t matter if he did, but I need to know.

I take off toward Francesco’s house, where I’ll be meeting everyone. True to his word, when I arrive, Luca and his men are there, along with my capos and several soldiers.
